A YOUNG child at a Halesowen school was pulled clear of a reversing car, narrowly escaping injury during the morning rush.

The incident involving a reception pupil at Newfield Park Primary School prompted an immediate letter to parents from headteacher Angela Mander urging them to take care.

She wrote: “Understandably his parent was very upset and angry about the incident. Fortunately, all was ok – this time.

“Accidents only take a moment to happen but can cause irreparable harm to all concerned.”

Mrs Mander said parents and other motorists sometimes used the school entrance to turn round as they negotiated the busy Whittingham Road which created a hazard.

She added there were also concerns about parking on the double yellow lines outside the school at the start and end of the school da.

Mrs Mander, who personally mans the school gate each morning, said she hoped the letter would reassure parents, especially those of the new intake, that the school did not expect such issues and was vigilant.

She added: “Many of the parents park away from the school and walk and a lot walk from their homes which is very good.”

School opening times were previously extended to alleviate parking problems enabling parents to drop children off from 8.45am before the school bell at 8.55am.
