BROMLEY Council has secured a £28,000 boost towards the opening of a new learning shop in Mottingham.
The project is being funded by the Learning and Skills Council and will convert a disused shop in Kimmeridge Road into the new centre.
It will contain a computer suite, a learning room, meeting areas and a reception area with drop-in internet access.
The project aims to build on the success of the Mottingham Children's Project, which has already delivered a wide range of community education to more than 300 parents with children in local primary schools.
The funding will be matched with extra cash from Bromley Council, Orpington College and the Bromley Primary Care Trust to the tune of £110,000. It is set to open by April 2002.
Bromley Council's education committee chairman Councillor Brian Humphreys said: “The need for a local learning centre was identified three years ago, but, despite the best efforts of all involved, the project had not materialised, largely due to lack of funding.
“So this is excellent news for Mottingham, which has few accessible services and opportunities.
“The project represents a real commitment of all the agencies involved to listening and responding to local demand.”
