ENGINEERS have confirmed that the gateway to Tenbury will be closed early next year to enable major repairs to the 600 year old Teme Bridge.
After investigations Worcestershire County Council have dented any hopes that an emergency bailey bridge might be possible although a temporary foot crossing will be provided.
This will be used by people on foot, those with buggies and also cyclists, who will be advised to dismount. It is likely that alternative parking will be provided on the Burford side of the bridge.
An alternative crossing for vehicles was always likely to the ruled out for practical reasons and because of the cost.
No forecast has been made about how long the bridge, that was widened in 1870, will have to be closed for but it is thought that it is likely to for several months.
It is considered that the early months of the year is the least bad time to close the bridge because it avoids the main holiday season, the various Tenbury Festivals and the run up to Christmas.
