Candidates are named

Voters go to the polls on Thursday, June 4, to select 74 councillors to serve on the new Shropshire Council, with hopefuls fighting in 63 new wards.

Nominations have now closed and this week the candidates standing for election were announced.

In Ludlow South, the Cons-ervative Martin Taylor-Smith, deputy leader of the former South Shropshire District Council and Mayor-elect of Ludlow, is involved in a straight fight with Vivienne Parry, a well-known figure on the Lib Dem benches of both the former South Shropshire district and Shropshire county councils.

In Ludlow East, former members of South Shropshire District Council Ed Havard (Conservative) and Tracey Huffer (Liberal Democrat) face Christine Evans, from the British National Party, and Labour’s Gareth Williams.

One of the most interesting contests is in Ludlow North, where veteran former councillor Peter Corston fights the Liberal Democrat corner against Rosanna Taylor-Smith (Conservative), environment spokesman on South Shrop-shire District Council.

Ludlow North is especially difficult to call because of the involvement of former Cons-ervative Graeme Perks, who stands as an Independent. In this ward, candidates also include Imogen Herford, one of a number of Green Party hopefuls, and Caroline Snyder, for the British National Party.

The combined Church Stretton and Craven Arms ward will elect two candidates – a fight against the Boundary Commission’s merger of the two towns into a single ward having failed to change the decision.
