STROKES are a major killer and cause of disability.

A simple blood-pressure test can provide an indication of risk and this was provided at a stroke awareness event at Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

It is an annual event organised by Ludlow Rotary Club.

As well as a blood-pressure check, people were also able have their blood sugar levels checked.

High blood pressure can be an important risk factor in strokes but it often has no symptoms.

Blood-pressure levels change during the day and are affected by issues such as physical activity. Therefore, a single high reading may not be significant but can point to a potential problem that would benefit from follow up with the GP.

In some cases, blood pressure can be reduced by lifestyle changes such as diet or taking more exercise. In other cases it can be controlled by medication.

As well as being linked with strokes, high blood pressure can also increase the risk of heart attacks and kidney disease.

In addition to having the tests, people who attended the stroke awareness day were also given general advice by medical experts.
