A GROUP set up to help keep Ludlow dry has had an important meeting with experts on flooding.

Members of Ludlow’s Flood Action Group met with representatives of the Environment Agency, Shropshire Highways, Shropshire Water and Flood Management Team and the National Flood Forum to discuss areas of concern regarding potential flooding along the Corve and Teme.

“We have established an excellent relationship with members of the multi-agencies,” said Rosemary Wood, chairman of Friends of the Corve and Teme.

“Residents tell us about debris, blocked drains, overgrown or dead trees, and silted-up areas which could lead to flooding. We then table these concerns with the multi-agencies, so potential problems can be discussed and action agreed.”

A recent site visit to look at a variety of problems identified by residents included gullies in Corve Street and Temeside; overgrown vegetation at Mill Street Weir; a large tree in the middle of the weir at Dinham; silt under the Old Corve East Bridge and the flood relief channel off Coronation Avenue.

These concerns have been or are being addressed by Shropshire Council and the Environment Agency.

“While no single solution can manage flood risks, measures can be taken that improve traditional flood defences and reduce the impact on the community should a flood occur,” added Rosemary Wood.
