LUDLOW Civic Society has met with Shropshire Council to express concerns about new ‘environmentally friendly’ lighting for the town centre.

The Civic Society is concerned that new-style lighting might be installed that is inappropriate for the historic town centre.

A group from the civic society met with Jason Hughes, the street lighting commissioner at Shropshire Council. The meeting was also attended by Vivienne Parry, Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow south and Tracey Huffer who sits on Shropshire Council for Ludlow East.

They were told that new LED lighting uses significantly less energy than traditional bulbs resulting in environmental benefits and cost savings.

LED lighting has already been installed in Shrewsbury and Wem and will be rolled out across the rest of the county over the next five years but no date has been set for the work in Ludlow.

However, any lights that fail will be replaced by LED lamps.

Once a date has been set, Shropshire Council will enter into discussions to agree a new heritage style of lamp standard to be installed throughout the conservation areas in the town.

For the outlying areas of the town the council will install a new modern style of lamps.
