ONE hundred years ago, the horror of the battle of the Somme was at its height and our picture shows one of the heroes who did not survive the onslaught.
George Samuel Farmer was a private in the seventh battalion of the King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
He lived at Middleton and died of his wounds on November 13, 1916 just five days before the end of the battle. His name is among the 72,000 listed on the memorial at Thiepval.
