FORMER old Etonian Ludlow MP Philip Dunne is backing a man brought up by a single mum on a south Wales council estate for the leadership for the Conservative Party.

Philip Dunne declared his support for Stephen Crabb in the race to be the next Prime Minister.

Following David Cameron’s decision to step back and allow fresh leadership after the UK voted to leave the European Union, nominations to become the next Conservative leader have closed.

Philip Dunne, who is defence procurement minister, said the nation now needed a candidate who could unite the party and get the best deal for Britain as it looks to leave the EU.

“David Cameron has done an excellent job both as leader of the party and as Prime Minister, so I am sorry to see him go,” said Philip Dunne.

“It is now important that a new leader looks to heal divisions, and delivers the best deal for the UK as we leave the EU.

“Stephen Crabb is a highly principled, energetic politician, with a clear vision to build an aspirational Britain and deliver the referendum outcome. He inspires confidence and trust in those who know him and would deliver these qualities as Prime Minister.

“Stephen has held two portfolios in the cabinet, and I have worked with him since 2009, when we were both party whips in opposition and then in government. He has sound judgement, is a straight-talker and is well-placed to bring the party and the country together.”
