ENVIRONMENTALISTS, community volunteers, youth workers, health campaigners and musicians were recognised in the Ludlow Town Council Civic Awards.

Young people from the 333 Ludlow Squadron of the Air Cadets received a group award and one of its leaders Maureen Daw was recognised for her youth work.

Shaun Ward from St Laurence Church was one of the members of the choir who came forward to receive an award from Paul Draper, Mayor of Ludlow, in recognition of the choir contribution to the music and culture of the town.

The Mayor praised the work of Gill George who was recognised for her campaigning on behalf health services in the town and surrounding area. She leads the Ludlow based ‘Save our NHS in Shropshire Group.’

Jane Davies, who also received a Civic Award, has been active in the community of Gallows Bank including playing a part in organising the annual firework display and helping with the BMX track.

Two long serving Ludlow environmentalists were also recognised.

Roger Furniss has been a leading figure in Ludlow 21 for many years and also played a big part in establishing the Green Festival.

For more than 20 years he has been a town guide and for 35 years has been involved with Ludlow Hockey Club that reached the National Vase Final. He is Development Officer and Umpire Secretary for the Club. Roger Furniss is also a former teacher at Ludlow College.

Another stalwart of Ludlow 21 David Current was also recognised.

David Currant was chairman of the group between 2001 and 2014.

He also chaired the prestigious Shropshire Environmental Alliance from 2009, presiding over its transformation to Green Shropshire Xchange in 2012.

David Currant has also chaired the Southern Area Partnership Development Group, the Ludlow Marches Partnership and represented Shropshire on national boards and committees.

He was a founder of the car share scheme in Ludlow.
