LUDLOW MP Philip Dunne has welcomed announcement of a global tour of the Magna Carta from Hereford Cathedral.

Magna Carta begins a global tour in a partnership between Hereford Cathedral and the GREAT Britain Campaign.

An original version of this historic document, and the only surviving King’s Writ from Runnymede in 1215, will pass through seven countries, across four continents, travelling a total of 65,000 miles.

Philip Dunne represents the Ludlow constituency which falls under the Hereford Diocese.

“This 800th anniversary of Magna Carta is a great opportunity to enable other countries to see this remarkable document that has played a central role in the development of democracy across the world,” he said.

“The Magna Carta was the first time that the king accepted he was subject to the law - it limited the King’s power, starting a journey towards democracy and enfranchisement. It also proclaims that all free men have the right to justice and a fair trial, which still holds true today.”

“This global tour will show the spread of modern democracy from Hereford Cathedral to the rest of the world and promote a key part of Britain’s history.”
