A LUDLOW traders’ campaign group is advising people how to object to a planning application that has been lodged for a supermarket and petrol station on the edge of the town.

The bid to build on the Dun Cow Farm site at Rocks Green adjacent to the A49 and A4117 has been lodged with Shropshire Council.

“The ‘Love Ludlow’ Campaign is currently writing a detailed and thorough response to the application,” said Tish Dockerty, secretary of Ludlow Chamber of Trade.

“This will be published on the website soon and emailed to those that have signed the ‘Love Ludlow’ forms available in many high street shops.

“In the meantime we urge supporters to make a comment on the application via the Shropshire Council’s planning department ‘planning portal’."

The campaign argues that there are sites in the town centre that could be used for a convenience store making development outside the A49 unnecessary.

But the key concern is that a supermarket on the edge of Ludlow would move shoppers away from the town centre and put at risk the viability of small independent shops.

Blackfriars Development Limited, which is behind the proposal, says the supermarket would create a large number of new jobs. There has been a public consultation about the scheme.

They also say that it would keep business in the area and remove the need for people to travel of other towns like Shrewsbury, Kidderminster and Hereford for a large supermarket shop.

No supermarket chain has been linked with the site although it is claimed two household names are interested.
