Paul Tighe of Lower Galdeford, Ludlow, takes issue with a view on Christianity

I WRITE concerning the letter from Mr RP King (Advertiser, April 12).

As a means of communicating anything, let alone a Christian truth, it is a dismal failure. I’m sure we’re all suitably impressed by your research into historical Jewish recording – it’s just a shame you got it all wrong.

Firstly, my ‘modern mind’ is ‘determinedley literalistic’; that’s probably because I’m neither stupid enough nor conceited enough to think I know better than the word of God.

Secondly, the writers of the New Testament would not have used ‘Midrash’.

They wrote simply about the things they had seen and heard directly. Luke, for example, was not only a doctor but a highly accomplished historian whose methods are very much respected and copied today.

My biggest objection to RP King’s spurious gobbledygook, however, lies in the fact that it was printed under the heading “Christian Voice”.

Let me be clear – this was one of the most blatant of anti-Christian articles I have ever read. “We are now free to say that Jesus’s bones may still lie in Palestine” – what utter garbage. At the very core of Christianity is the fact that Jesus physically rose from the dead (and there were hundreds who testified to that fact). Without the full, physical, touchable resurrection of Jesus there is no hope. Paul said: “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins...we are to be pitied more than all men.”

But the truth is then reaffirmed – “Thanks be to God.He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” and he urges his readers, not just at that point in his writing, but constantly, to take hold of the “incomparably great power”

which He exerted in Christ when He raised him from the dead.

That’s the Good News, Mr King.
