THE recent takeover of British Energy by French company EDF is another dose of bad news handed to us by the Labour government.
EDF claim they want to build four new nuclear power stations in the UK and the Government seems to consider this as their bit to help tackle climate change. The most generous estimates claim that a new generation of nuclear will only deliver 4% cuts in carbon emissions by 2024 – far too little, far too late.
What we really need is a massive investment in renewable technologies that already exist, some of which can be put in place within months with a fraction of the investment needed for nuclear.
