THE photograph in the Advertiser on November 12 of Ludlow Town Hall, which was demolished in 1986, will have revived memories for many Ludlow people.
At the time, I worked in the WRVS office, and a large group of townspeople watched sadly as the demolition of the magnificent building began. All agreed that it would be a great loss to Ludlow. Only a year earlier, the interior had been completely refurbished.
The town hall was very functional and in use on most days of the week. Situated on the first floor were the town council chamber, and one of the finest ballrooms in the county, and on the ground floor, our office, kitchen, and the indoor market hall, where it was a pleasure to shop, being pleasantly cool in summer and weatherproof in winter.
Our market traders now have to stand outside all day in all weathers, and shoppers at the market risk being soaked if it rains heavily.
Even 35 years on, the town hall is very much missed by many people, and Ludlow has never seemed quite the same without it.
