IS it me or are we reliving some bygone moment in history such as Europe of the 1930s?

I am disappointed yet not surprised that local MP Philip Dunne is in favour of Cameron's wish to scrap the European Human Rights Act.

It is reminiscent of Hitler's purge on rights following his rise to power in 1933.

His 'Gleichschaltung' legal measures suspended most citizens' rights yet fooled the public into believing it to be for the country's good. For example, he replaced trade union rights with the more patriotic sounding yet impotent 'German Labour Front' where 'strength through joy' (Kraft durch Freude’) was promised, yet denied.

We all know where that sorry story ended.

Cameron will also tell us that the 'British Bill of Rights' will be better for Britain - yet this would weaken everyone’s rights – leaving politicians to decide when our fundamental freedoms should apply.

These are the same people who came for open justice, destroyed legal aid and attacked judicial review. We cannot let them take away our Human Rights Act too.

Think of the Thatcher years cover-ups over Hillsborough and Westminster paedophile rings. If our current home secretary can't still set up a fair judicial review into the alleged abuse and possible murder of children some 30 years after the event (when Thatcher's home secretary apparently mislaid the damning dossier), then how can we trust these shabby politicians to protect anyone?

With disregard for the food banks that exist locally, false promises of growth and all too real promises of further austerity cuts, I feel that similarities with the 1930s are too close for comfort.

Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Dunne?
