CAN I suggest that before the situation with Tesco becomes even more bizarre, a community meeting should be arranged at which members of the public, Harriet Baldwin MP, and Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis thrash out exactly what the future holds for our town.
To most clear-thinking people the concept of a Tesco store in Tenbury was always a disaster waiting to happen, and now with the company’s losses forcing colossal cut-backs the future for Tenbury is riddled with uncertainty.
Not only is the second phase of improvements to the town-centre hanging by a thread, but a major scheme to expand our museum as a visitor attraction has stalled.
One has every right to ask the question: 'Why should we be held to ransom by a company that at one time had 400 communities fighting to keep it from their streets?'
Tesco have told our MP that the project is still going ahead, but why would a company that’s closing 43 stores and facing the deepest crisis in its history give a second’s thought to a small community in the heart of the Worcestershire countryside?
Tenbury Wells is a tiny town yet we have two supermarkets, two butchers, two bakers, a fishmonger, a greengrocer, a sweet shop and a newsagent, so why would anyone go to the expense of building a Class A1 foodstore even if cost was not a problem?
Can we have a public meeting at the Community Hall ASAP please?
