I wrote in the Advertiser, June 13, inviting Councillors Price and Penn to suggest where 50 or so shoppers and traders will park their cars once Tesco has taken over the Cattle Market.

Neither replied with any suggestions, or any explanation as to why the priceless tarmac car-park recently laid on the far side of the Teme Bridge was ripped up once renovation work on the bridge was completed.

Mr Muncaster from Berrington Road has written to suggest the cars could either park on the completed Tesco car park or on the pay-and-display area behind the library, but both these suggestions are non-starters.

Everyone knows that several pensioners have passes for the pay-and-display area and at times virtually every space is taken, so to assume that an extra 50 or so cars could park there on a daily basis is out of the question. One has to remember also that once construction begins on the Tesco site it will be closed to parking for many months.

Tesco is going to love Muncaster’s suggestion that locals could leave their cars on its parking area once it’s up and running.

Supermarkets will go to any lengths (even employing inspectors) to ensure their parking spaces are available to customers and not used for long-stay convenience.

Perhaps he would also like to explain to the Tenbury townsfolk exactly WHY DID the tarmac on the North side of the river have to be ripped up.

The reason I find this issue so frustrating is the fact that on two occasions over the years I’ve sent photos to the MHDC showing every parking space in the town occupied with over sixty cars parked on the Cattle Market site.

I’ve begged the council not to wait until the site is developed to consider providing more parking but to take action early so that the problem is solved in advance.

Invariably any replies I’ve received have stressed the problem of cost, so here we are with Tesco hovering and no extra parking in the pipeline. It’s a great shame because we all know what a huge benefit it would be to the town if tourists and visitors knew there was ample space to park.
