Poppy Appeal support was again outstanding I WOULD like to offer sincere thanks to all the people of Tenbury Wells and district for the outstanding support everyone gave to the 2007 Poppy Appeal.

This year over £8,000 has been raised, a fantastic sum for a relatively small community. Each year the appeal is swelled by collections in shops, factories and pubs and from our dedicated band of street collectors. Your support as always has been superb.

This year's Poppy Appeal Concert was held in St Mary's Church, Tenbury Wells. From the feedback the British Legion has had the concert was a resounding success. The Tenbury Town Band, St Michael's Singers, Ludlow Male Voice Choir and the Flanagan and Allan act, who all performed so superbly, are justifiably deserving of great praise and thanks. We are hoping to stage a repeat performance for the 2008 Poppy Appeal.

Finally, from the Tenbury Wells and District Royal British Legion may we extend our good wishes to everyone for a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful and Joyous New Year.

Richard Jones, Poppy Appeal Organiser, Berrington Mews, Tenbury Wells.

Fabulous response to child box appeal ON behalf of every member of Ludlow Methodist Church, I want most sincerely to thank the people of south Shropshire for all the love and concern that they have shown in creating Christmas Child boxes this year.

Boxes at Poyner's shop came from, among others, the Mothers' Union, The Townswomen's Guild, Ludlow Thursday Cub Pack, the Elim and Methodist churches, Orleton (and Brimfield) and Farlow Primary Schools, the residents of Doddington Heights and other organisations and individuals from as far as Tenbury and Church Stretton.

We owe special thanks to Briggs' Shoe Shop for providing the boxes.

I cannot say how delighted I am to tell you that the total created this year was 1,377 boxes (compared with 596 last year). I am lost for words at such generosity.

This total does not include the rocking horse (going to a good home at an orphanage), the wrapping paper and 10 bags of cuddly toys which were also donated.

Thank you so much to all on behalf of the needy children who will receive gifts. The people of Ludlow have really shown part of the true meaning of Christmas.

May God bless you and your family this Christmas.

S J Dalton, Senior Steward, Ludlow Methodist Church, Ashford Carbonell.

Re-birth of parish hall at St Mary's AN opening ceremony on November 24 saw the re-birth of the Parish Hall at St Mary's Church, Tenbury Wells. It was conducted by the Bishop of Ludlow, the Rt Rev Michael Hooper at the commencement of the winter fair.

Phase one of the redevelopment of St Mary's saw the removal of the pews from the north aisle creating an open space suitable for community functions. Phase two has been the construction of kitchen and toilet facilities under the balcony. These new facilities mean that the functions of the old parish hall can now be carried on within the church itself making it even more suitable for community use.

Money not being available to refurbish the old parish hall, it was sold in the early 1990s and the money realised from the sale put into charitable trust by the diocese of Hereford. This money and its accrued interest was released by the Charity Commissioners on condition that it was used solely for the provision of kitchen and toilet facilities within the church, otherwise it could be taken back by the diocese.

The development committee under the chairmanship of Prof Gordon Lawrence has been very active in securing grants from many sources which, together with generous donations from Tenbury people, had made up the balance of the money required.

Functions within St Mary's include concerts for the British Legion Poppy Appeal, Red Hot and Blue and Tenbury Town Band. St Mary's Winter Fair is now held within the church.

The Citizens Advice Bureau hold fortnightly coffee mornings and on Saturday Kemp Hospice held holding their Tree of Light service together with Tenbury Chamber of Commerce's Santa's Grotto.

Our thanks for a very enjoyable medieval fair ANOTHER Ludlow Medieval Christmas Fair has come and gone, and has been a huge success with thousands of visitors both local and from further afield.

May we extend our genuine thanks to everyone who took part; local businesses and shops, stewards and voluntary groups, a truly successful and very enjoyable weekend. Without your help we would not be able to put on this popular event.

A successful summer - after the floods DURING the summer I was responsible for the catering at The Green Café at the Millennium Green. After we eventually recovered from the summer floods, we had a successful summer.

While the Millennium Green waits for the grant funding, I have now taken The Green Café to Bakers, 6 Tower Street, and open on Friday and Saturday evenings for local people and visitors.

I have no car to visit the food market IT was lovely to see Ludlow Food Market at Bromfield mentioned on BBC One's Country File on Sunday, November 25.

I would love to be able to visit the market, as probably so many others who have no car would, but the town bus does not go that far. Is it not part of our town? The Shrewsbury bus does goes past the market but there is the A49 to negotiate.

Perhaps the powers that be will bear this in mind when planning ahead.

Freda Child, Gravel Hill, Ludlow Dogs ban on walks is to continue THE annual meeting of the South Shropshire Group of the Ramblers Association, Craven Arms decided to continue their ban on dogs on walks.

The motion proposing dogs should be allowed on rambles was defeated by 26 votes to six.

A motion suggesting group leaders should be allowed to bring their dogs was also lost by a similar margin.

Dennis Nisbet, Shrewsbury Road, Church Stretton.
