A SOUTH Shropshire agricultural show is back in the big time after a successful event this year.

Chairman Richard Yates said this year's Burwarton Show had restored the event to the premier league of one day ag ricultural shows in the country and was a tremendous advertisement for British agriculture.

This year’s show has been two years in the planning because flooding resulted in the cancellation of last year's event. Mr Yates said it was re-assuring to see all the show's improvements had worked successfully.

The newly introduced shearing competition proved highly successful and drew a huge crowd of spectators with more than 30 shearers competing.

This, together with the entertaining pig agility class, made the whole livestock area busier than ever with throngs of visitors keen to see the display of animals being exhibited.

Local winners included Mike Brown, of Baron's Cross Charolais Stud, in Aymestrey, near Ludlow, who saw two of his animals pick up wins.

Mike saw his 13-and-a-half month old novice bull Charbron Honourable win his class. He was then named champion Charolais.

'Honourable' then went on to become reserve champion in the interbreed beef championship.

Mike's heffer Charbron Honour also won her class and became reserve Charolais champion.

"It was extremely hot but very well supported and there was a lot of good stock there," said Mike.

Hereford champion was MJ and HM Timmis with Shraden 1 Joker and the British Blue champion was N Pritchard with Brown Clee Granger.

The Inter-breed Group of Four Beef Cattle Championship was won by the Limousin breed, with Herefords as reserves.
