OLD Station Business Park is in a lovely spot just half a mile from Cleobury Mortimer on the road to Bridgnorth.

It’s lovely place to work but on the face of it about as far away from Silicon Valley or The Cambridge Triangle as you can get.

But Kudos Blends established from a front room just 12 years ago is selling a product to the other side of the world that is going to help improve the health of millions of people.

It is not an artificial replacement for a key body part or a piece of state of the art medical equipment but humble baking powder.

For the first time since records began and taking out the statistical impact of major wars the life expectancy of the next generation looks like being less than the present.

The reason for this is a combination of less exercise and what we eat. The proportion of people who are obese is growing at an alarming rate but it is not just size that matters.

We eat too much salt and salt and in excess is bad for us causing high blood pressure which is in turn the major cause of heart attacks and strokes.

When we think of salt it is food like fish and chips and fry ups that come to mind, but in fact cakes and bakery products are a major contributor to high salt intake.

Here is where Dinnie Jordan, a chemist who set up Kudos Blends, comes into the picture.

The company has defied the economic downturn and is expanding rapidly. As well as customers in this country, it sells into the United States and Canada. A New Zealand distributor has been appointed and the business is looking at Australia as a market.

All of this is because Kudos Blends has established itself as a leader in the production of low and zero salt baking powders.

In the process Dinnie Jordan is earning a reputation as something of an international expert of salt reduction in the bakery business.

The work of Dinnie and her team is set to improve our physical health and allow us to feel a tad less guilty next time we tuck into a piece of sticky bun.

Its serious science not just a piece of cake!
