TWO soldiers rewarded for outstanding acts of bravery with a prestigious and rare civilian honour have been celebrated by Major Adrian Coles of Clee Hill.

Major Coles, who recently retired after many years of service in local government, met the two men who were commemorated by the Shropshire Society.

Warrant Officer Class 2 Kim Hughes and Corporal Ricky Furgusson had previously received the George Cross and Military Cross respectively, two of the highest military awards.

They were presented with the Captain Webb Medal at a ceremony at the Shrewsbury Flower Show by Shropshire Horticultural Society president Michael Lowe CBE and were also made honorary life members.

Confer red by the Shropshire Society in London, the Captain Webb Medal recognises examples of extreme courage by people from the county.

The medal was instituted by Captain Adrian Jones, the society's president, in 1916, in honour of Captain Matthew Webb, the first man to swim the English Channel.
