A 20-year-old woman who started a fire in a Church Stretton house when her mother was in the premises is to receive hospital treatment before being sentenced for the arson attack.

Chloe Turner's mental health problems will be assessed over the next three months under an interim hospital order.

At Shrewsbury Crown Court this week Judge Jim Tindall made the order under Section 38 of the Mental Health Act and adjourned the case until June 16.

Turner, of Brook Road, Craven Arms, had admitted a charge of arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered at a previous hearing.

The court heard that Turner had lit a duvet on top of a sofa at the house on Street Meadow when her mother Sarah Gibbons was inside.

Lisa Hancox, prosecuting, said the incident happened on October 30 last year when the defendant had been due to be spend the night at her mother’s home.

Mrs Gibbons had been asleep on the top floor of the house when she was woken by the fire alarm.

She found the duvet on fire on top of a blanket which she said was “like a bonfire”.

Miss Hancox said that having left the house she saw her daughter, who was fully dressed, walking down the road and talking on her mobile phone.

The blaze caused about £80,000 of damage to the semi-detached property.

The court heard that Turner had contacted the police herself and said ‘I’ve done something stupid’.

In an interview she said she did not know why she had started the fire and had not intended to hurt anyone.
