STUDENTS at Lacon Childe School in Cleobury Mortimer have upped their game yet again.

Against the national trend, the school has again improved its GCSE results, returning the best results ever.

But headteacher Darren Reynolds, who has seen improvements over the past three years, says that the only thing to do is keep trying to get even better.

“The time when we start to get complacent and say that we have done okay will be the time when things start to go wrong,” he said.

Students took time out of the summer holiday to return for their results often with anxious parents in tow. But for most there was little to worry about.

More than 72 per cent of the students attained five or more A* to C graded GCSEs including English and maths.

This is more than 12 percentage points higher than last year and an amazing result for both the school and its students.

Eighty-five per cent of students achieved A* to C in English and 79 per cent achieved A* to C in maths.

"The school excellent results in the progress of each child during their time with us at Lacon Childe," said Darren Reynolds. "Ninety-one per cent of students achieved their expected progress in English.

"More than half (55 per cent) exceeded expectations and more than 72 per cent achieved their expected levels in maths and 28 per cent exceeded them."

There was more statistical success with more three quarters of students entered for the English Baccalaureate subjects attained A* to C grades with sciences and humanities topping the table at 84 per cent and 85 per cent respectively.

Top achieving students included: Tristan McCallum who achieved 8 A* and 1 B graded GCSEs, Joe Francis - 4 A* and 5 A, Idonea Kruft-Welton – 3 A*, 5 A, and Matara Scott – 3 A* and 5 A.

Our other high attaining students were Danielle Andrews, Freya Ball, James Butler, Daisy Fierek, Elisa Kinsey, Daniel Morrish, Lucy Ramsey, Oliver Rowbotham, Shannon Smith, Lowri Southall, Sophie Taylor and Sidney Turner.

“The achievements of our students is down to the engagement and enthusiasm they have for their subjects and the sheer hard work they and their teachers put into studying and revising,” said Darren Reynolds.

“We are so proud of them and wish them the very best in whatever they do next year.”

Among the students collecting their results was Emily Price who was pleased with her 3As, 3Bs and a C.

She is one of the best young women golfers in the country and will go on to study at Millfield College in Somerset that specialises in top sports prospects and then to university in the United States where she will combine study with golf.

If things goes to plan Emily will not need her exams but will go on to make a very good living from her sport. But she took time off from her golf for exams knowing that she needs a fall back as very few make it to the very top in elite sport.
