IN addition to the usual health information on screen in the waiting room at Bishop's Castle Medical Practice, patients are now able to see at a succession beautiful wildlife and nature pictures taken by Lydbury North photographer Andrew Fusek Peters. Many of the shots have come from his new book 'Wilderland-Wildlife and Wonder in the Shropshire Borders'. Andrew explains, "The book has only just been published and I was very pleased when Dr Adrian Penney asked me if some of the pictures could be screened in the waiting room. I hope people find them as uplifting and inspiring to look at as I found it was taking the shots themselves." 'Wilderland' represents three years' work and is a new interest for Andrew who has written many books for young people and performed his poetry, prose and music in schools all over the UK. "After spending so many years shut away at my computer and travelling the country I woke up to the fantastic outdoor world literally on my doorstep," he explains. "My previous book 'Dip' was about my experiences of wild swimming in rivers, lakes and the open sea. I illustrated it with my own photographs and found I really loved getting out in wild places with my camera." Andrew quickly realised he need to invest in top quality equipment and he has been rewarded with images that fill the pages of 'Wilderland'. Andrew continues, "Many of my pictures were taken just up the lane from where I live where there are hares and skylarks. I like going out at night to remote places such as the Long Mynd where I recently photographed a pond reflecting a dark starlit sky. That picture ended up in a national newspaper and could only have been taken in a part of the world that has no light pollution." Several years ago Andrew was introduced to Nadia Kingsley owner of the Fairacre Press in Oswestry by Anna Dreda, who runs Wenlock Books in Much Wenlock. Fairacre quickly agreed to publish 'Wilderland' and it was launched in April at a cost of £24.95. The distinctive cover shows a long haired fallow deer emerging from undergrowth in the Mortimer Forest, near Ludlow. Andrew was thrilled to celebrate such a rare creature. "It's the only place in the whole world where this deer can be found and it was discovered as recently as the 1950s," he says. As well as taking the pictures, Andrew has written the text, which is perfectly matched to the images. He is a fan of the 'new nature writing', including poetry, personal reflection and some technical information on cameras and lenses he has used. The Long Mynd, Whixall Moss, Bury Ditches, The Stiperstones and Dudmaston are just some of the locations you can recognise in the book which is on sale in Art and Artisan bookshop in Bishop's Castle and other Shropshire bookshops.
