THE driver of a vintage lorry smashed through a banner during a south Shropshire transport cafe re-opening – and then sat down to breakfast with the owners.

The ‘Open Now’ banner was part of the decorations at the Lazy Trout, the UK’s oldest transport cafe and now trading again at Marshbrook, about two miles south of Church Stretton on the A49, after a re-fit by brothers Jonathan and Adam Jay – owners of the nearby Green Dragon Inn at Little Stretton.

“We invited Andy Price, who runs the Marshbrook Garage and whose father Martin has a collection of vintage vehicles, to bring along a vintage Bedford lorry to perform the ‘drive through’ ceremony – and he was then our first official guest for breakfast,” said Jonathan, pictured with Adam (left) and Andy (centre).

The Lazy Trout has been serving travellers along the county’s main highway since 1937, and was once famous for its myna bird Skip, which would shout out orders from the menu, much to the annoyance of the chef who cooked them for non-existing customers.
