Clows Top

CLOWS TOP AND DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB - August is all about relaxing and enjoying the summer. Schools have broken up, the holidays are here and there’s no better time to have a barbecue, play garden games and splash about in the paddling pool. Our gardens are looking great with late summer perennials putting on a show-stopping display and the veg patches are sending produce in abundance. Relax and soak up the magic of summer.

If you’re going away make sure that the garden can cope with the summer heat. If you can, ask a neighbour or friend to water the plants outdoors, and the indoor plants.

At the June meeting, Paul Underhill, gave an interesting talk on the subject Trees and Things. Paul owns and runs a local family business, Landscape Plants (Cleobury) Ltd, Six Ashes Nursery, Bridgnorth Road, Cleobury Mortimer, DY14 8JF. The nursery specialises in growing trees in containers for large commercial projects which are sent all over England and Wales. Many of the trees seen in supermarket or hospital car parks probably came from here.

They can also supply cottage perennials, Italian topiary, bamboo and a wide range of shrubs.

It was also the club’s rose and sweet pea show. Some good specimens were entered, many thanks to Anne for judging the show. The results were joint 1st Bob Marriott and Chris Cowdell and 3rd Austin Fletcher.

Best exhibit Bob Marriott.

If you’re not a member then come along and join us at one of our monthly meetings. It’s a great opportunity for you to share your thoughts, ideas and advice with other members. We have a great programme of speakers as well as evening visits to local gardens. Our garden club has a very friendly atmosphere, everyone is welcome. Norbury

GARDEN MEETING FOR NORBURY WI - Norbury and District WI met at The Glebe, Ratlinghope for their annual garden meeting. Luckily, the evening sun was shining very brightly as the president, Rita Preston welcomed everyone. Business began with news of past and forthcoming events for the institute. As usual there were many interesting things to sign up to - a reminder to support Norbury WI at Shrewsbury Flower Show tomorrow and Saturday; enjoy a day out at Cheshire Polo Club September 13; enjoy Snailbeach ramble October 4 and the centennial fair at Harrogate September 5.

The first garden meeting speaker was one of our members, Jo Mitton- Gore who was chosen by ballot to represent Norbury and District WI at the WI centenary garden party at Buckingham Palace. She recounted her experience of this special day and had dressed for the evening meeting in her palace finery. She showed us her posh invitation – a wonderful memory keepsake for her.

The second speaker was Janet Brandon BEM, Norbury WI members were very proud when Janet was given her award last year for her services to the local community. Janet told of her experience of meeting royalty at a Buckingham Palace garden party that she had been invited to in order to celebrate her prestigious award. Thanks were given to both Janet and Jo for their tales of memorable days. Members then looked around Janet and Vicky’s lovely garden – it is an absolute delight. Being a delightful rural idyll, each corner we turned showed us what their hard work has achieved in producing fine vegetable plots; a pig- sty area containing a massive sow with loads of her little piglets running around freely, chickens and ducks too. The evening ended with about 30 members invading Janet’s delightful kitchen/house for a delicious supper prepared by Margaret Cooke, Brenda Jones and June Pinches.

There was much chatter and laughter.

The fun garden quiz competition was won by Trish Lowe. Thanks were given to Janet and Vicky, not forgetting Gus, Alan and family for letting us invade their wonderful garden.

A summer walk will be held at 6.30pm next Thursday, August 20, at Walcot Hall, Lydbury North. The next Norbury WI meeting on September 10, at 7.30pm in the new village hall. The speaker is Rachael Hopkins of White Cottage Interiors.
