CHARITY BINGO AT KINGS HEAD - Cash bingo evenings in aid of charity will begin again in Bishops Castle on September 16. This year’s venue is the back room at the Kings Head and with a new £50 jackpot each time, people under the age of 16 cannot play. Julie Burgwin and Jan Robertson began their fortnightly bingo sessions in 2013 and have raised £20,000 for local causes as well as UK and international charities. Jan presented a cheque for £1050 to the AMP (About Music Project) at the Bishops Castle party in the park and also organised a raffle at the event to help boost their funds. Log onto bcchallengewalk.co.uk for full details or call 01588 638467. The 24-mile walk costs £16. Eleven and thirteen mile walks cost £12. Youngsters pay £5. The walk is organised by Bishops Castle Parish Paths Partnership (P3) Group with the support of the town’s tourism company, and the money raised this year will go towards Bishops Castle Town Hall Target 250 fund – the fund set up to raise the match funding for the hall’s major renovation. There is still some £1,300 to raise locally towards the nearly £1 million restoration of the Grade II* listed hall which opened last June and now hosts a full range of activities as well as being the Visitor Information Centre for the area – bishopscastletownhall.co.uk.

SUMMER EXHIBITION - The Old Surgery Gallery in Clun is currently holding its summer exhibition. The summer exhibition runs throughout August and the gallery is open seven days a week including Sundays and bank-holidays 10am to 5pm. For more information contact Tim Wood 01588 640506.

ECO-CONGREGATION - Members of Clun Methodist Church have, for several years, been developing an Eco- Congregation at Clun Methodist Church under the auspices of A Rocha UK, a Christian charity working for the protection and restoration of the natural world. Elizabeth Newman wrote about this process – encouraging awareness as a group and as individuals is important – and of course trying to do something about it when we don’t like what we find. This has led to a side range of initiatives including work to improve insulation, monitoring of electricity consumption, the giving away of bee- friendly plants, use of Ecover cleaning materials, two Swap-Shop events (to recycle items from someone who no longer needs them to someone who does) active support for such organisations as WaterAid, litter-picking after Green Man, raising awareness of local opportunities to recycle etc. We believe that we humans need to become much more aware of the environmental damage we are doing by our present lifestyles – Pope Francis recently spoke out strongly about this, though the problem seems huge each individual contribution in caring for the environment will make a difference, and we need to make that difference if future generations are to inherit a planet fit to live on.”

NEW VICAR - The Rev Simon Mondon is the new vicar for the Clun Valley Benefice. He will be moving into Clun in October with his wife Tandy. They have three grown up children.
