Church Stretton

CELEBRATION AND COMMEMORATION EVENT - End of the Second World War in Europe and Japan 1945.

It is 70 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe (VE day May 8) and in the far east (VJ day August 15, 1945) In Church Stretton, the Royal British Legion intends to mark these two dates with a single celebration and commemoration event on Sunday with a service in St Laurence’s Church at 3pm.

A parade, lead by the Mayor Cllr Mike Walker, the Royal British Legion and local organisations, will gather at Church Stretton and District Club in Essex Road from 2.15pm and leave at 2.30pm.

During the service, the Last Post and Reveille will be played and a single poppy wreath will be laid in the church.

Following the service, the parade with return to the club for afternoon tea kindly donated by a supporter of the Royal British Legion.

The Royal British Legion was founded by British veterans in the aftermath of the First World War and is at the forefront of these commemorations.

As we come together in Remembrance of events 70 years ago, we are reminded of the important welfare work the legion continues to provide today and will need to provide in the future.

The problems facing First World War veterans when they returned to the UK continue to affect serving personnel and veterans today: whether living with bereavement or disability, finding employment, or coping with financial stress.

John Corfield – Publicity Officer – RBL Church Stretton Branch.

Clows Top

CLOWS TOP AND DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB - The garden should now be looking its best. The borders are full of colour and scent such as roses and sweet peas fill the air and the vegetable garden producing fine crops.

Long summer evenings can be enjoyed to the full, relaxing and entertaining friends.

However, there’s always something to be done.

Make sure you keep feeding hanging baskets.

Dead-head roses, sweet peas, bedding plants and perennials to keep them blooming.

Take cuttings from your favourite tender plants for over-wintering indoors.

Cuttings can also still be taken from shrubs and herbaceous perennials.

At the May meeting, Leigh Griffiths, gave an interesting talk on ‘metal detecting’. Leigh is a local girl from Cleobury where she does most of her detecting in fields with permission from local farmers.

She came along with some of her finds, coins, brooches, bracelets, spindle whorls and pottery. All were all interesting artefacts and it certainly open our eyes as what can be found in a recently ploughed field.

If you’re not a member then come along and join us at one of our monthly meetings.

It’s a great opportunity for you to share your thoughts, ideas and advice with other members.

We have a great programme of speakers as well as evening visits to local gardens.

Our garden club has a very friendly atmosphere, everyone is welcome.

Don’t be afraid to come along, we are a garden club not a horticulture society, the membership is only £10 pa.

However, non-members are welcome to any monthly meeting.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday and the speaker for the evening will be Nick Tristram-Eve with a talk entitled chocolate.
