AN adrenaline-loving couple who live near Tenbury Wells made a splash when they had their recent nuptials blessed during a special underwater ceremony.

James Abbott, a teacher at Abberley Hall School in Great Witley, and his fiancé Dorota Bankowska tied the knot in a 1.5 million litre onshore seawater tank in Scotland, which is normally used for subsea training and trialling new equipment.

Around 100 guests travelled to the Underwater Centre in Fort William to watch the ceremony, for which the bride wore a traditional wedding dress and veil, weighed down for the occasion, while her husband wore a kilt.

They were joined in the tank by bridesmaid Ala Bankowska and best man, Charlie Cran-Crombie, and all four of them wore diving helmets and diving equipment which enabled the words spoken to be played out through loud speakers for the crowd of friends and family.

Even the rings were presented to the couple using one of the centre's underwater robots.

The couple live at Abberley Hall School, where Mr Abbott teaches design and manufacture as well as outdoor activities. He has used his love for all things adventurous to set up an after-school scuba diving club for pupils at the school

"The ceremony was better than any of us could ever have imagined. We wanted to do something different and we certainly achieved that," he commented.

He and Dorota, who is one of only a handful of female saturation divers in the world and now works as a commercial diver in the oil and gas industry, were officially married in her home town of Plock in Poland in October but were keen to mark the occasion with friends in a special way.

She said: "We're both very happy to be able to complete our wedding celebrations in such a unique way; James and I don't do things traditionally.

"It's great that my friends and family were able to get a better idea of what my job is actually like and the environment I work in."
