A VISITOR attraction in south Shropshire made famous by television is making poetry this summer.

Acton Scott Historic Working Farm is producing poetry this summer, as well as eggs, butter and hay.

Ludlow-based poet Jean Atkin has been poet in residence at the farm since Easter.

Her mission is to engage with visitors, encouraging them to hear and write poetry about the farm.

Instances of poetry have sprouted around the farm buildings and all along the length of ‘The Poetry Fence’, and Jean is running workshops for regionally-based poets and would-be poets, plus special workshops designed for school visits.

The residency is online too and poems from as far away as USA have been emailed to Jean to put up on ‘The Poetry Fence’.

“The youngest poet I’ve worked with was just three-years-old, and he’d just sat on a Shire,” said Jean.

“But people of all ages and backgrounds have come in and written poems for the farm. It’s an inspiring place.”

Jean’s residency ends with ‘Poems for the Farm’, a celebratory event on Saturday July 19, at 3pm at the Farm.

It will be a chance to enjoy many voices, as those who’ve been involved during the residency will get the opportunity to read their poems to an audience.

She will also read some of her own work written during the residency, in part in collaboration with poet, writer and photographer Andrew Fusek Peters. There will be an exhibition of their work.

Tickets are free but should be booked in order to receive a complimentary cream tea.
