RESIDENTS at a sheltered housing scheme in Bishops Castle are taking to two wheels thanks to the launch of their own cycling club.

Enthusiasm among people living at Grange Road for getting on their bike has led to funding being secured through Shropshire Council and the Local Joint Committee for new bikes to be bought.

The five new bikes will be used for, among other things, short organised rides with the council's ‘Pedal for Health’ team.

Those who want to get some training before they take to the highways will be able to receive instruction, as well as high visibility jackets to help keep them safe.

Funding for the scheme was put together thanks to the efforts of Travel Shropshire project officer, Ray Hughes, along with Shropshire councillor, Charlotte Barns, and Matthew Mead, of Shropshire Council.

South Shropshire Housing Association housing support officer, Jeremy Hall, has been involved in pulling the scheme together for the residents.

“These bikes will be available for anyone who wants to work on their fitness and for the health benefits just as much as they will for those who just want to ride socially in a group and enjoy being on a bike,” said Jeremy Hall.

“We're not looking for the next Sir Bradley. We just want people to get together and enjoy each other's company and have a safe ride out on a bike.”

A secure shed to store the bikes has also been provided, to ensure residents will have them to use and enjoy for years to come. Now all the tenants need is for the weather to pick up, allowing them to safely begin their road-going fun.
