ENGAGING ISSUES - God and The Big Screen is the title of a talk by Elaine Storkey on Tuesday at the URC at 7.30pm. Elaine Storkey is an English philosopher, sociologist and theologian known for her lecturing, writing and broadcasting. This lecture is brought to attendees by the Montgomery Trust. All welcome, £3 suggested admission.

COMMUNITY CINEMA - Les Miserables (12) is the film to be screened at Acton Scott village hall on Tuesday at 7.30pm. Admission for students is £2 and £4 for adults.

Interval refreshments will be availa ble. Jean Valjean, known as Prisoner 24601, is released from prison and breaks parole to create a new life for himself while evading the grip of the persistent Inspector Javert. Set in post-revolutionary France, the story reaches resolution against the background of the June Rebellion.

MEETING - A meeting of the neighbourhood watch will take place on Tuesday at the parish centre starting at 7.30pm.

CAMERA CLUB - Longmynd Camera Club met for the first meeting of the year on January 8 for a practical evening on discovering digital. Three members shared their own photographic problems and experiences working in this format and demonstrated various topics. On show was the new laptop purchased from the Stretton Focus Award money which will enable enhanced presentations to be shown. The club very much appreciates this award. The next meeting of the club is on Wednesday which will feature the third club competition in the series on the subject of ‘people’. The judge for the evening will be Mike Peak, ARPS. Meetings are held at the URC hall from 7.30pm and visitors are always welcome.

There is a break during the evening for tea and coffee. Looking ahead to March 5, wildlife photographer Michael Leach will be presenting an evening of entertainment looking at the realities of capturing animals on film for books and television.

STRETTONDALE LJC - The next meeting of Strettondale local joint committee will take place at the Silvester Horne Institute on Thursday, January 23 at 7pm. Items on the agenda will be broadband and policing, all welcome.

SCHOOL NEWS - The start of a new term and pupils at St Lawrence’s Primary School are preparing to take part in the Shropshire winter games, an indoor athletics event , where they will represent South Shropshire in the competition in tag rugby, hockey and cross country.

The under-11 boys football team will also be playing in the next round of the County Cup and a trip to Arthog is planned for years five and six.

There is a thank you for the support of the toy sale which raised £98 for the purchase of new board games.

ADVICE FAIR - The Green Party meeting on January 25 at the Ludlow Mascall Centre from 2-5pm will be all about coping with cold. A panel of speakers will be available and MP Philip Dunne has also been invited.

RNLI - The local RNLI fundraising committee invites everyone to Sing Our Songs along with the Strummers at the district social club on January 25, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and are being sold through John Thomas Florists of can be reserved by ringing 01694 722138 and 724371.

AGMs - Three local annual general meetings take place this month. The Longmynd Hike meeting will be at the district social club on January 26, at 8pm, and the Shropshire Literary Society AGM is at the library at 7pm on January 27. The Shropshire Ornithological Society will also meet on January 27 at the Methodist hall at 7.30pm for its AGM which will be followed by an illustrated talk presented by Jim Almond. Admission for non-members is £2 including refreshment and all are welcome.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL - A Holocaust memorial event has been planned for January 27 at the URC at 7pm when there will be readings, images and a silence remembering the holocaust and genocides. POST OFFICE - Don’t forget that the modernisation of the post office will take place following a temporary closure after 5.30pm on January 29, re- opening at 1pm on February 14.

While this post office is closed the branches at Dorrington and Wentnor will be open as usual. Work will not affect the opening times of the Spar.
