MUSIC NIGHT - Tim McConville in concert with Andy Watt will be entertaining at the Silvester Horne Institute on tomorrow (Friday) from 7.30pm. Admission at the door is £10.

This event is part of the Friday night at the Horne programme.

APPLE PRESSING - There is a chance to take your apples along for pressing at Rushbury village hall on Saturday from 10am - 4.30pm. During the day refreshments and light lunches will be served and teas and coffee and cake will be available.

PITSTOP - Pitstop will again take place at the parish centre on Sunday from 3pm - 5pm with a theme of Love Rules.

RELIGIOUS ICONS - Rev Hazel Ratcliffe will be speaking about Looking at Religious Icons at 6pm at the Methodist Church on Sunday. All welcome.

CANCER CARE - The October meeting of Stretton and Shropshire Cancer Care will take place at Mayfair on Monday starting at 2.30pm. Moray Hayman, Macmillan Cancer information and support manager will be explaining how the information and support services at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals work with all cancer multidisciplinary teams within the trust, in particular the cancer nurse specialists, and liaise with other local providers to ensure an accessible service. The new Information and support centre is a vital source of good quality information and support and is free of charge to anyone affected by cancer. It can provide information on specific cancers and treatments and information on local and national support groups, as well as information about benefits and support from other services. The September meeting gave a chance for everyone to pass on hints on managing life with cancer if they wished to do so and in that way members could help support each other. During the summer the group was out and about enjoying a summer outing with a tour of a beautiful Elizabethan house followed by a light afternoon tea, and followed that with a garden party on August 12 thanks to an invitation from Beryl and Tony Smith. The date for the annual Christmas bazaar has been set for November 20, and will be held at the parish centre from 10am-12 noon.

MAYFAIR - The Poetry Cafe on Wednesday has a theme of Flame and Fire and offers a chance to read or listen to poetry from 2.15pm - 3.45pm.

On Thursday, October 17 Peter Thorpe will be giving a talk on Dhaka - a Lifechanging Experience at 7.30pm. All welcome.

STRETTONDALE LJC - A public meeting by Strettondale LJC will be held in Cardington village hall on Thursday, October 17 starting at 7pm.

GARDENING CLUB - An outing to Westonbirt Arboretum has been arranged by Church Stretton Gardening Club on Thursday, October 17. To enquire about seats for this full day outing please ring 01694 720131.

The next meeting of the club will be on October 29, at the Silvester Horne Institute when there will be a talk by Maurice Everett on Tresco Abbey Gardens. Doors open at 7pm for tea and coffee before the talk at 7.30pm.

SCHOOL NEWS - There has been a geography trip for students at Church Stretton School and the final expedition for the Silver Award for year 11 D of E has taken place. The principal has hosted another well attended afternoon tea to celebrate the achievements of the students.

St Lawrence’s Primary School is starting a lunchtime homework club, and also reviewing its special needs provision. A travelling book fair will be at school and pupils will have the opportunity to select their choice of books from the exciting collection on offer.

BRIDGE - Calling all Bridge players.

WELL BEING - A recent public meeting was held at the Silvester Horne Institute to raise awareness of the proposed Well Being Centre and to encourage everyone to consider pledging something towards the cost of refurbishment. Coun Bob Welch spoke about the advantages of the project and a power point presentation was given by Nichola Macpherson on behalf of Mayfair which was helping to head the appeal. Much of the groundwork was already in place and if the final appeal for funds was realised the centre could be up and running by the end of 2014. The meeting was well attended and questions raised were fully addressed.

COUNTRY MARKET - The country market is open at Mayfair October 18 from 9.15am - 11.45am selling homemade cakes, produce and craft items and will continue weekly up until Christmas .

LUNCH - You are invited to enjoy a soup and apple pie lunch on October 18, at the parish centre from 12 noon - 1.30pm to help raise funds for Save the Children. Cost of the lunch is £5.50 which is paid at the door and will include coffee or tea. There will be a raffle and a stall selling cards and gifts at the event.

COMMUNITY CINEMA - Presents Brighton Rock (15) at All Stretton village hall on October 18, and Acton Scott village hall will be showing Summer in February (15) on October 22 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £4 for adults, £2 for children. Interval refreshments are available.

DANCING - Circle dancing takes place each Wednesday during term time at St Lawrence’s Primary School from 7pm-9pm led by Judy Harvey.
