FILM - Salmon Fishing in the Yemen will be showing tomorrow (Friday) at All Stretton village hall at 7.30pm.

TABLE TENNIS - Saturdays offer taster sessions of table tennis at the leisure centre from 9-11am. There is no need to book; just pop in and give it a try for £1 for the U/16s and £3 for adults.

CANCER CARE - Dr Roger Wilson will be the speaker at the meeting of Stretton and Shropshire Cancer Care group at Mayfair on Monday at 2.30pm on the subject of ‘What I have learned about cancer research’. Roger became involved as a patient representative in cancer research in 2002 and has seen a huge range of developments since then. For three years he served on the National Cancer Research Institute and remains as a member of the patient advisory group and will speak about the new treatments and developments all aimed at making things better for patients. The group has reported that there has been a marked increase in the incidence of malignant melanoma in people of middle age, curable if diagnosed early enough, and because of this the importance of improving awareness of the signs and symptoms of skin cancer is highlighted and anyone noticing any unusual changes in their skin should visit their doctor promptly. Stretton and Shropshire Cancer Care group is there for people who have cancer, their relatives and friends.

ENGAGING ISSUES - Jesus and Buddha will be the subject of the next Engaging Issues meeting at the URC on Tuesday. Donald Horsfield will be speaking on Crossing Religious Boundaries. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and all are welcome.

TREE GROUP - The Tree Group will be hosting a talk by Peter Carty of the National Trust at their meeting on January 17 at the Methodist Church Hall at 7.30pm. Peter’s subject is Living Edge. Admission for non-members is £3 and all are welcome.

INTERFAITH FORUM - The South Shropshire Interfaith Forum will meet at the Pilgrim Centre in Craven Arms at 12.15pm for a talk on The New 194th State in the UN - A Journey to Freedom and Peace? Feel free to bring your own lunch to this short discussion meeting on January 17, which will be introduced by John Cribb.

CAMERA CLUB - At a recent competition at Longmynd Camera Club, the digital images section was dominated by Ken Robinson in first place, Richard Chambers in second place and Tony Martyr in third place, while David Wraity took first place in the prints section followed by Dorothy Robinson in second place and Grahame Stovold in third.

The subject of the next competiton will be fairly topical as it is rain/bad weather, and will be judged by Sally Bevingtion LRPS.

NEW COURSES - A number of courses are on offer during January at Church Stretton School including an Introduction to Digital SLR Photography, a workshop on Spreadsheets using Excel, a workshop on Databases Using Access, and Learn to Play the Clarinet - all for eight weeks starting on January 22. Moving to January 23, there are courses on File Management and e-Document Production, a PowerPoint workshop and Learn to Play Keyboards. Courses start at 6.30pm and are for those aged 19 and over. COMMUNITY CINEMA - Private Peaceful is the film to be screened at Acton Scott village hall on January 22 at 7.30pm.

FAMILY QUIZ - The 2nd Longmynd Scout Group is hosting a family quiz night at the District Social Club on Saturday as a fund-raiser. Entry fees are £3 for those of 17 years plus, £1 for 12s-16s and U/12s free. All welcome.

MORNING AFTER WALK - There were many more entrants in this year’s Morning After event than last year as well over 300 people took part on a bright sunny January 1. The first man to finish was Paul Jones of Oswestry in a time of 30m 58s, beating his time in last year’s event by 10 seconds, and the first lady home was Alison Lavender of Oswestry followed by Mel Price in second place. In the veteran section the first man to finish was Ed Davies and the first lady was Jane Rowlands.

In the juvenile section the first boy home was Ben Ashcroft and the first girl was Megan Lloyd. The first local man home was Colin Lancaster.

The organisers are thankful for the support received - the event raised £1,400 for local charities.
