A 52-YEAR-OLD man and his son carried out a sustained assault on a man on the doorstep of his Craven Arms home, a court heard.

Karl Marnick was left with a dislocated shoulder and a detached retina following the late-night attack in which he was kicked and punched to the head and body.

At Shrewsbury Crown Court last week James Roberts was jailed for 10 months and his 22-year-old son, Kiah, was given a suspended prison sentence.

The court heard that earlier there had been friction between James Roberts and 54-year-old Mr Marnick at a local pub.

Judge Peter Barrie told the defendants that nothing in the lead-up to the assault could justify what happened.

"It’s clear you quite deliberately went to Mr Marnick's house looking for a fight to sort it out,” he told James Roberts.

He told Kiah Roberts: “You joined in what wasn’t really your fight in loyalty to your father. You played a lesser but a significant part.”

The two men, both of Oak Fields, Craven Arms, had admitted assaulting Mr Marnick causing him actual bodily harm in October last year.

Kiah Roberts was given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to complete 200 hours unpaid work.

Both defendants were also made subject to a restraining order preventing them having any contact with Mr Marnick for the next five years.

The court heard Mr Marnick was attacked at his home in Ash Close after an earlier clash with James Roberts at the Stokesay pub.

He had decided to go home at 9.30pm and later heard his doorbell and when he opened the door saw James Roberts bouncing around with his shirt off and fists clenched.

James Dunstan, prosecuting, said a witness saw Kiah Roberts throw a punch towards Mr Marnick’s head causing him to stumble.

James Roberts had pushed Mr Marnick and he fell backwards before the pair used their feet as a “weapon” and began kicking him to his upper body and head.

Mr Marnick was later taken the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital where it was discovered he had a dislocated shoulder, cuts to his face and a detached retina.

When interviewed by police, James Roberts denied he had been spoiling for a fight and Kiah Roberts claimed the victim was the aggressor.

Adrian Roberts, for both defendants, said his clients had been subject to a degree of provocation.
