THE popular Borders Classic Bike Show at Cleobury Mortimer is back with a bang.

It looks likely that a record entry will be attracting bike enthusiasts from all over the Midlands to Lacon Childe School in Cleobury on Saturday and Sunday (September 12 and 13).

Guest of Honour is veteran racer Les Trotter who will be bringing two of his racing Suzukis, one of them the special he built in his home workshop and rode to win the 500cc Manx Grand Prix in 1976.

He has a special display showing his racing career of 52 years and it will be a feature on the show’s main stage, where he will be interviewed on both days.

Local interest is very strong, with a mixture of exotic and eccentric. Like the 500cc Czech built acer racer of Geoff Mann and the 1950 French-built Derny, a 98cc motorised tandem.

Smallest machine in the exhibition will be Ian Harris’s 1951 Raleigh Tradesman’s Bicycle with a 32cc Cyclemaster engine in the back wheel.

There are big and beefy bikes too, like ex racer Stuart Shannon’s 500cc Seeley-Matchless, a candidate for a new award in memory of the late Valerie Reynolds, titled She Would Appreciate That Sound! It will go to the most rorty exhaust note heard at noon on Sunday. The neighbours have been warned.

The show is known for the quality of catering the school’s Parent Teacher Association provide and its happy atmosphere. New this year is a cash raffle on both days, with a first prize of £100 - it could be a rewarding visit for someone.

It is open from 10.00 until 5.00 both days and is signposted from the A4117 Ludlow road. Admission is £4.00 and all profits go to the school. Organiser Jim Reynolds is available on 01299 270642 or email uncle.jim@icloud.com
