A CLEOBURY Mortimer hairdresser is proving age is no barrier to setting out on your own in the world of business.

Gemma Newton, who lives in Brimfield, was just 19 when she bought a hairdresser's business.

Now at the age of 20 she is encouraging would-be young entrepreneurs to follow their dreams after taking over Edna Maes in Talbot Square.

"I would say 'just go for it'," said Gemma."Even though it is hard work there are a lot of benefits that come out of it.

"As long as you put the work in you can achieve what you want.

"The work I do reflects on me and only me and that is what I love about it."

Gemma, who worked as an apprentice at the business, took over after its previous owner decided to move back to Wales and she was asked if she would be interested in buying it.

"It was a big risk to take just because I was thinking 'I am19 can I do this?'," said Gemma.

"It makes you grow up quickly.

"It's been really good. I've got a steady client base, you get quiet times but there is somebody here everyday."

Gemma hopes that somewhere in the future she will be able to expand the business.

"I don't want to do it yet but eventually it would be good to open more shops," said Gemma.
