ABBA EVENT - Wednesday, July 18, is the Abba - Bjorn Belief event at Ashfield House, Leebotwood, to raise funds for the Shrewsbury Rainbow Ward, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and Haematology Clinic 9.
During the evening, which starts at 6pm, there will be live entertainment, a disco, bar, food, a bouncy castle for children and a grand draw. The event is organised by Tom Peel and admission is by ticket only priced £15, or £3 for under-10s. For details ring 01694 751261 or 07968 654033.
SWAP SHOP - Sunday is the next Swap Shop at Church Stretton School when the public are invited to take along unwanted items between 11am-3pm and swap them for others. Items must be clean, reusable and non-hazardous. Toys, bric-a-brac, sports equipment, games, tools, CDs and musical instruments are all acceptable but please do not take items of furniture, faulty or illegal goods, electrical items, underwear or broken items.
COMPETITION - For those who wish to take part in the creative bottle recycling competition organised by Scrappies Scrap Store in Lutwyche Road, entries should be taken in no later than July 18.
The competition can be entered individually or jointly by others from a school or club, and the idea is to create an object using plastic bottles. All of the items will be photographed and exhibited on display boards in store. The entry could be accompanied by a small booklet giving instructions for making the item. All entries will be judged by a preselected panel and prizes for the best will be awarded at 2pm on Wednesday, August 19.
Entry fee is 50p per item or £1 for a group or adult entry, and entry forms are available at the store.
TRASH & TREASURE - A ‘Trash & Treasure’ sale will be held at the Parish Centre on Saturday from 2pm-3.30pm when bric-a-brac, books, toys, garden equipment, plants and clothes will be on offer.
Donations to any of the stalls can also be made. Admission is 50p, children free, and includes refreshments. Proceeds of the event will go to Rose Cottage Cat Rescue.
DANCE EVENINGS - If you would like to learn or take part in ballroom dancing on Friday evenings at the Silvester Horne Institute, the first opportunity is tomorrow (Friday) from 8pm-10pm. For details, call Len Hussey on 01694 724030.
QUIZ NIGHT - The Scout HQ is the venue for a quiz night on Saturday.
Tickets are through Burway Books and John Thomas Florists and cost £5 to include a cheese supper. Soft drinks will be available but quizzers may take along their own drinks.

WALKS - Diabetes UK fund-raisers are planning a walk on Sunday over the Longmynd starting at 10am from Carding Mill Valley. There is a choice of two or five-mile routes and entry is free but registration must be made by ringing 01922 614500 beforehand.
Also on Sunday, there is also a guided walk in Carding Mill Valley starting from Church Stretton station at 1pm or meet at the Chalet Pavilion at 2pm. On Thursday, July 9, there is walk on the Longmynd from 10am-12.30pm to discover the range of flowers. Both are organised by the National Trust and entry is £3.
GARAGE PRAISE - The next Garage Praise will be on Saturday, when organisers will be preparing a barbecue at the garage on the industrial estate. All are welcome.
GREEN FAYRE - On Saturday, the Green Fayre is in The Square from 10am-4pm as part of Green Festival week, and will be followed at 7.30pm by a folk group evening with Seize the Day at Rushbury Village Hall. Tickets for the evening event are being sold through Burway Books and John Thomas Florists.
ART WORKSHOP - Church Stretton Art Group is hosting a pouring watercolour demonstration with Betsy Smith at Church Stretton School at 7pm, on Wednesday, July 8. Those who wish to attend should take along tube paints, palette, brushes and stretched paper. To find out more ring 01694 724245.

FOOTBALL FRENZY - Thursday, July 9, is the final Football Frenzy, run by Red Rovers Football Club.
The session runs from 6.30pm-8pm and is open to girls and boys aged from five to 12 years. More details are available on 01694 723543 FLOWER CLUB - Eileen Gill travelled from the Isle of Man to demonstrate her skills in flower arranging to Church Stretton & District Flower Club. It was obvious in her designs that she is passionate about her subject. After the demonstration, the arrangements were raffled and winners were Penny Martin, Maureen Clow, Curigwen Davies, Val Hotchkiss, Iona Trevor Jones, Mary Edwards, Audrey Phillips, Jane Pugh and Sally Lucas Garner. Church Stretton Flower Club will be meeting again on Tuesday, July 28, at 7.30pm in All Stretton Village Hall when Bridget Manton will be the demonstrator.
PRAYERS FOR PEACE - Prayers for Peace drop in at St Laurence’s Church will be tomorrow (Friday), from 10am-4pm with specific prayer requests this month from St Milburga’s.
SMALLHOLDERS - Shropshire Smallholders group will get together on Thursday, July 9, meeting at 6.50pm prompt for a walk on Prees Heath, led by Clive Dean, who works for the parks and countryside team. It is hoped to spot rare Silver-studded-Blue butterflies. The walk will last for just over an hour and will be followed by a meal at a local inn, with the evening rounded off looking for glow worms. TEDDY BEARS’ TEA PARTY - A teddy bears’ tea party will be held at Preen Manor Gardens, Church Preen on Saturday from 2.30pm- 5pm. Take a teddy bear and a picnic and something to sit on. During the afternoon there will be children’s games and at 4.45pm a grand parade of teddy bears. Admission is £3.50 for adults, children and bears free and tea and squash are provided. Please pay at the gate. All proceeds will go to the new organ fund at Church Preen Church.
BARBECUE: Tickets are available at Mayfair for a barbecue and 60s evening in Carding Mill Valley on Saturday, July 11, at 7pm. The barbecue meal will include a pudding and there will be a vegetarian option if ordered in advance. A wine and beer bar will be open. Admission is by ticket only and costs £10 from Mayfair.
SENIOR CITIZENS - The Senior Citizens’ Club will be meeting on Friday, July 10, at 2.30pm in the URC Hall and Clare Cotterill will be organising a quiz. All are welcome.
RUSHBURY TOTE - The June tote in aid of Rushbury Village Hall funds was drawn at The Plough Inn and winners were J and A Caine and Mrs Becky Hotchkiss, who each won £5, Tony Richardson and Mrs Brenda Pogson, who each won £10, and Mrs Sandra Ayres, who scooped the £40 prize. The next tote draw will be made on July 25.
SCHOOL NEWS - Church Stretton School will be open on Thursday, July 9, from 6pm-9pm for an exhibition of art and design and design technology GCSE work.
On Saturday, July 11, Church Stretton Parents and Friends Association hosts a Band & Curry Night at the school at 8pm.
Meat or vegetarian curry will be available and VLAADKA will entertain with a wide range of lively music. Advance tickets should be purchased either from the school or from John Thomas Florist & Pet Supplies and cost £8 for adults, £5 for children, which includes the food.
The year 10 girls’ tag team has recently won the Telford Hornet RFC Trophy and now they are all off on work experience for two weeks.
Various sports day activities have been arranged for years seven and nine followed by a sports morning and afternoon on July 14. Pupils have returned from the French exchange trip and others have been raising money for the Morocco trip with a cake sale.
ST Lawrence’s Primary School year six pupils have been over to Church Stretton School on intake day. On Friday, July 10, there will be a kite flying and social evening at Acton Scott Farm in aid of Chihangu Primary School, with a barbecue and other refreshments. A Bag2 School collection has been arranged.
Pupils from class one have been to Chester Zoo and year four pupils will be off to camp. The tag rugby finals take place on July 8 and music workshops are planned for classes four and five on July 9.
The swimming pool, which is sited at the school, will not be open to the public in the evenings or weekends at present due to the building work taking place.
However, the Summer Tots swim on Thursday mornings and the open swim on Friday mornings will go ahead. It is hoped that the pool will be open again to the public during the summer holidays.
