TREE GROUP – The local Tree Group held a tree identification walk through Rectory Wood last week, led by forester Gareth Jones.

With the trees being in leaf, some were fairly easy to recognise but Gareth was able to show walkers how to distinguish between trees which had very similar leaves and drew attention to the patterns in the bark, which varied between different species. There are many different types of trees in Rectory Wood and this made for a very interesting evening walk. Gareth was thanked for leading the walk by Hilary Hymas, chair of the group.

The group has arranged a visit to the Leighton Redwoods, where there are some remarkable trees, on Saturday, July 18. Everyone who wishes to attend will need to take their own transport but further details are available by ringing 01694 723208, or 723456.

SUMMER FEST – Church Stretton was buzzing last Saturday when the Summer Fest was in full swing.

There were stalls in the streets and street entertainment, with additional entertainment and displays at various venues around the town. People were still enjoying the fun at the evening entertainment in Rectory Field. The Victorian Extravaganza at Church Stretton School saw a full house enjoy the concert by the More Singers, compered by Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn, fresh from filming at Acton Scott Farm Museum for the next Victorian Farm series and dressed in their Victorian working costumes. They provided some light-hearted humour in their introductions to the programme. The More Singers and soloists were also similarly attired in Victorian dress. During the interval, there was a book signing and opportunity to speak with Alex and Peter. Drinks and nibbles were served and a raffle drawn. The second half of the programme was Gilbert & Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, with the soloists Carolyn Chadwick, Chris Walker, Stephen Davis and Edmund Coxhead, together with the orchestra, led by Anne Tupling, and the More Singers.

SCHOOL NEWS – A number of pupils have been given awards at Church Stretton School and last week headteacher Steven Lunt hosted a tea party to welcome parents and pupils along for the presentation of certificates. He opened by saying this was one of the first such afternoons which would take place to celebrate the special achievements, which were then outlined by Mrs Leask. The guests included the Mayor, Councillor Bob Welch. During the break, there was a musical interlude provided by one of the pupils while tea was served.

There is an open invitation to the exhibition of art & design and design technology GCSE work at the school on Thursday, July 9, from 6pm-9pm.

At St Lawrence’s Primary School, there have been successes in music exams for violin at Grade 1 and Grade 3, and the tag rugby team is to go forward to the national finals at Rugby School. There was also an invitation to take part in the Telford and Wrekin tag rugby tournament, which saw the A team win the trophy, scoring 51 tries and conceding three in the seven games, while the B team scored 25, conceding four before losing out to the A team in the quarter-final. In all, 18 pupils took part in the 31 team tournament, playing in wet and cold conditions, but both teams showed great spirit and the standard of rugby was outstanding.
