TALK - Tomorrow (Friday) the Church Stretton and District Rail Users’ Association will hold a joint meeting with the Strettons Civic Society to hear Philip Bennion, local MEP, speak on the subject of The Future of Local Public Transport.

The meeting will take place at the Silvester Horne Institute at 7.30pm.

Admission is free but donations are welcome, so pop along and meet Mr Bennion and ask him your questions.

SALE - A sale of Christmas cards, diaries and gifts in aid of the RNLI will be available at the Co-op supermarket from 9am - 3pm on Saturday arranged by the local fundraising committee.

TRANSPORT EVENT - An exhibition and demonstration of the latest electric and plug-in hybrid cars, some of which have a battery range of over 100 miles, will be held at Church Stretton School on Saturday from 10am - 2.30pm courtesy of the Greenhous group.

Many well-known makes will be on display and experts will be on hand to answer questions.

FESTIVE TIPPLE - Enjoy a festive tipple and see the new Christmas displays of tempting treats, delightful decorations and gorgeous gifts available at Entertaining Elephants on Saturday from 3.30pm - 6.30pm.

BONFIRE EVENTS - The gates will open in readiness for the town bonfire display at 6.30pm on Saturday with the bonfire being lit at 7pm and the fireworks display at 7.30pm.

There will be music, a bar and refreshments available.

After the town bonfire there will be a family party at the District Social Club starting around 8.30pm and while stocks last there will be complementary hot dogs and free drinks for the children. The bar will be open as usual.

COMMUNITY CINEMA - Presents Shell (15) on Monday at Church Stretton School. Doors open at 7pm and refreshments are available. Admission is £4 and £2 for anyone in full time education.

BONFIRE NIGHT - Acton Scott Village holds its bonfire night on Tuesday at 7pm. The £2 admission includes hot soup and a roll and there will also be hotdogs available. All welcome.

CAMERA CLUB - The next Longmynd Camera Club meeting will be on Wednesday at 7.30pm in the URC Hall when Peter J Siviter, EFIAP, will present an audio-visual and DPI of his work entitled A Kind of Magic.

The presentation will include image manipulation and show the standards required to achieve high acceptance rates into FIAP exhibitions.

The meeting on October 23, was entitled My Life in Mono presented by Peter J Clark, who showed pictures of some of the prints he had originally produced in his darkroom before moving to producing images digitally.

He suggested ways these could be manipulated to enhance the image for competition work.

He was thanked for the presentation and talk by David Kennedy.

Visitors are welcome at any of the Longmynd Camera Club meetings.

ENGAGING ISSUES - The next Engaging Issues meeting will be on Tuesday at the URC starting at 7.30pm.

The speaker is Donald Horsfield on the subject of Who or What is God? and will explore the question of what does the word ‘God’ mean, where does it come from and what does it refer to?

Here is your chance to discuss what the answer might be. All welcome.

SCHOOL NEWS - There will be a Bag2School collection of clothing, soft furnishings, curtains, bedlinen, handbags, belts and good shoes from the school on November 27 at 9am.

Items may be brought in beforehand if desired.

The PTA has arranged a concert at the school on November 19 when the Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir will entertain following a day workshop at the school.

Pupils at St Lawrence’s Primary School dressed up as sportsmen on the mufti day before the half term break to raise funds for Hope House Hospice.

The under 11 girls football team is through to the second round of the county cup and there will be tag rugby and cross country competitions taking place.

Year six pupils will be taking part in the annual flag planting at the old cemetery with the British Legion.

COUNTRY MARKET - The country market held at Mayfair community centre will be open on November 8 from 9.45am - 11.45am for the sale of homemade cakes, produce and crafts.

MUSICAL EVENT - The Roving Crows will be making a welcome return to the Silvester Horne Institute to entertain with their own style of music on November 8 at 7.30pm.

Ticket sales are through John Thomas Florists, Burway Books and the town council offices and cost £9.

Admission on the door is £10 if space permits. This is one of a series of events for Friday Night at the Horne.

WIVES AND FRIENDS - Methodist Wives and Friends Group will be meeting in the Methodist hall on November 12 at 7.30pm for an evening of Christmas sugar craft.

This is an open evening and visitors are welcome to attend, admission is £3.

SMALLHOLDERS - At the October meeting of the Shropshire Smallholders Group the speaker was Robert Jeffery from NewLandOwner, a lifetime, third generation farmer who has diversified into providing specialist held and advice, particularly to smallholders.

He spoke about getting the best form grassland, grazing techniques, weed control, fertilisers and fencing.

There was also a chance for members to sell smallholder items such as eggs, jams, chutneys, tools and crafts, and to have the opportunity to offer items for sale or enquire for items wanted.

The meeting ended with question time followed by refreshments.

The next meeting will be on November 14 when Rob Cunningham of Maynards Farm will be talking about butchering and using the cuts from a half pig.

Visitors are always welcome as well as the guests of members. Admission is £3 and £1 respectively.

PSYCHIC EVENING - Apply at the District Social Club for tickets to an evening with John Cook, a psychic medium who will be at the venue on November 13. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

CRAFT FAIR- A craft fair at Church Stretton School will be held on November 16 from 10am - 4pm with over 50 stalls offering paper crafts, card and textiles, candles, photography, accessories, confectionary, and forged iron-work, together with local Christmas produce including preserves, cakes and puddings and much more.

A raffle, Christmas gift ideas, African, Ethnic and Fair Trade goods will also be available.

Throughout the day the PTA will be serving freshly cooked food, tea and coffee.
