TABLE TENNIS CLUB - There is table tennis at the Church Stretton leisure centre every Saturday from 9.30am to 11.30am. The cost is £1 for under 16s and £3 for adults. All abilities and ages are welcome and there is some coaching available. Come and try it out, no booking required.

FLU CLINIC - The next drop-In flu clinic at the medical centre will be on Saturday from 9am - 12 noon.

QUIZ NIGHT - A quiz night for Church Stretton Carers will take place at the District Social Club on Saturday starting at 7.45pm with Ken Willis as question master.

FOLK DANCE - An evening of folk dancing is on offer at Ticklerton village hall on Saturday from 8pm. No experience is necessary to take part.

ARCHERY - Taster lessons in archery are being offered at the YHA Wilderhope Manor on Sunday and October 27. Led by qualified instructors the tasters are for all beginners and for all ages and abilities. Cost per one hour session is £5 for adults, £3 for u/18s. COMMUNITY CINEMA - Presents Summer in February (15) at Acton Scott village hall on Tuesday at 7.30pm and the next film to be shown at Church Stretton School will be Shell (15) on November 4.

CAMERA CLUB - The Longmynd Camera Club meeting on October 9 was a competition evening when Tony Dudley judged the entries in the open subject competition. After commenting on each of the prints and projectable image pictures he selected three prints putting Hugh Stanton’s Dawn Silhouette in first place, David Wraith’s Hazy Days as second place and Graham Brown’s Road Less Travelled in third place. From the projectable image pictures he chose Norman Axtell’s Waiting for the Boats as first place, David Kennedy’s St Mark’s Square in second place and Hugh Stanton’s 50p a gallon picture of petrol pumps as third.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday at the URC hall at 7.30pm and will be a presentation by Peter J Clark entitled My Life in Mono which will include monochrome landscapes of Great Britain and the south western United States incorporating both darkroom and digital images. SCRAPPIES - October 5 was open day at Scrappies and attracted many visitors who were keen to look around and see what was available to appeal to their creativity. There were workshops to offer ideas for the children to try their hand at making small items, and there were ideas for Halloween too. The Shoebox competition attracted entries as diverse as games, treasure chests and a jubilee barge. Prizes were awarded to the winners in each of the three categories. LUCKY NUMBERS - The winning numbers in the Mayfair Lottery for September were 38, 457, 216 and 62 winning £100, £50, £20 and £10 respectively.

WIVES AND FRIENDS - The meeting of Wives and Friends at the Methodist hall on October 8 was very hands-on with Viv Potter arranging an evening of book- making using paper folding techniques and pages from a brochure to provide an interesting cover. She was thanked by the president for providing such an entertaining and creative evening. The next meeting of the group will be on November 12 and will be equally hands-on when there will be an evening of Christmas sugar craft. Meetings start at 7.30pm and visitors are always welcome at any of the meetings.

SCHOOL NEWS - It was a busy evening at Church Stretton School on open evening, followed by two open mornings to which parents were also invited. Students were on hand at the open evening to guide visitors around the school and the catering staff prepared typical school lunches which everyone could sample. There were demonstrations and fun activities in the various subject rooms and the drama students gave two short excerpts from the forthcoming production of Wind in the Willows. The evening ended with a talk given by the principal, Steve Lunt.

Pupils at St Lawrence’s Primary School will be taking part in a non-uniform day to raise funds for Shelterbox.

Pupils welcome parents and carers to join them at St Lawrence’s at 2pm on Wednesday for a harvest celebration.

Class one pupils have been on an autumn walk to Rectory Woods and class four has taken part in a music workshop. It is class nine’s chance to choose the lunch menu provided by the catering team.

LUNCH - A lunch in aid of The Bible Society will be held in the URC hall on Wednesday when the speaker will be Rev John Hall. Tickets are available through the churches and cost £5.

TALK - A talk under the heading A Human Rights Observer in the West Bank will be given by Rev John Howard for the UNA at the Methodist Church 7pm for 7.30pm on Thursday, October 24.

JUMBLE SALE - Rose Cottage Cat rescue will be holding a jumble sale on October 26 from 2pm - 3.30pm at the parish centre. Donations of items for the sale may be taken to the parish centre on the morning of the sale.

CHARITY CARD SALE - The annual charity Christmas card sale will take place at the URC hall on October 26 from 10am - 12 noon when there will be cards and gifts available in support of the West Shropshire Talking Newspaper, the Children’s Society, Cancer Research UK, RNLI, Severn Hospice, Save the Children, Traidcraft and Amnesty International.

BUMPER BOOK SALE - If you have books CDs or DVDs to donate for the bumper book sale on October 26 at the Silvester Horne Institute please drop them into Mayfair beforehand or ring 01694 724346 if you need to arrange a collection.

COFFEE MORNING - A coffee morning and sale of hand knitted items will be held at Ley Gardens on October 26 from 10.30am - 1pm .Admission is £1.50 including coffee, tea and cake.

FAMILY QUIZ NIGHT - The District Social Club is the venue for a family fun quiz night on October 26 starting at 8pm. Entry to the quiz is £2 and there are good prizes to be had.

CONCERT - On October 27 the Whitland Male Voice Chair will be in concert at Church Stretton School.

Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

TRANSPORT EXHIBITION - On November 2 there will be an exhibition entitled Electric Cars, the Transport of Tomorrow at Church Stretton School from 10am - 2.30pm arranged by Greenhouse and Stretton Climate Care. This exhibition will give everyone a chance to pop along and speak to the experts. More information is available by ringing 01694 723205.

UNITED SERVICE - October 27 is Bible Sunday and a united service will be held at St Milburga’s Church at 3pm.

LONGMYND HIKE - The recent Longmynd Hike attracted over 550 entrants attempting to master the 50 mile 24 hour event with good weather forecast. Before the awards were presented Brian Faulkner spoke of one entrant who first took part in 1994 and went on to complete the event this year, albeit with his new hip. There were thanks to all who entered this year’s Longmynd Hike and to all of the volunteers and helpers who assist in the smooth running of the event. The National Trust was to be thanked for donating spot prizes and a raffle. Brian then handed over to Brian Alston and Andrew Spurling, the checkpoint organisers, who were to make the presentations.

The Longmynd Staff was awarded to Andy Davies of Church Stretton for a time of 8h 24m; his eighth time of winning. The Gill Harris Ladies Trophy went to Helen Cork of Stafford for a time of 10h 52m. The Longmynd Scout Staff went to Terry Davies of the 2nd Longmynd Scout Group for a time of 11h 36m, the Junior Longmynd Staff was awarded to Francis Rooney of Church Stretton for a time of 18h 09m and the 2nd Longmynd Scout Staff went to Dave Spurling for a time of 15h 10m. The novice trophy was won by Greg Smith of Shrewsbury for his time of 9h 18m and the West Mercia Police trophy went to Emma Wareham also of Shrewsbury for a time of 11h 34m. The Eric Broom Staff was presented to Simon Jones of 1st Priorslee and St George’s, Telford, for a time of 13h 45m. The Swain Shield was awarded to Michael Warrick of Llandrindod Wells for a time of 10h 16m, and the Raven Trophy went to Diana Parsons of 2nd Longmynd in a time of 16h 58m. It was a second time win for Rodney Jones of Newport who received the Over the Hill trophy for a time of 12h 16m and Peggy’s Plate went to Libby Collinson of Much Wenlock for the second time for her time of 11 52m. The Mynd Trophy was won jointly by Richard Bacon, Emma Wareham and Alison Hartshorne for their combined time of 32h 56m. A final presentation went to Mrs Mary Spurling as a thank you for 25 years work as treasurer to the Longmynd Hike.
