MUSICAL EVENT - Another evening of music in classical style will take place at the Silvester Horne Institute tomorrow (Friday) at 7.30pm with soprano Akiko Takahashi and instrumentalists on piano, clarinet, harp, guitar, flute and cello. Admission is £7.50, half price for u/16s and u/12s free. Ticket sales are through Burway Books, John Thomas Florists and town council offices. Some may be available at the door.

LONGMYND HIKE - This is the weekend of the Longmynd Hike which is based at Church Stretton School and is a 24 hour 50 mile event starting on Saturday and continuing into Sunday and at present has 577 entrants.

SCRAPPIES OPEN DAY - Scrappies is celebrating its 20 years with an open day on Saturday opening from 10am - 4pm. A great day of fun for all the family is promised with workshops, games, competitions, refreshments and a chance to look around the store.

Prizes for the Shoe Box Competition will also be presented. All welcome.

QUIZ and BINGO - Choose your favourite occupation for Saturday night as Mayfair community centre will be hosting a quiz night at 7.30pm and Rose Cottage Cat Rescue will be hosting a family prize bingo at the District Social Club on Saturday starting at 7.30pm OPEN GARDEN - The gardens of Preen Manor are open on Sunday from 2pm- 5pm. Admission is £5 and accompanied children free of charge.

There will be plants for sale.

COMMUNITY CINEMA - Presents Lincoln (12) on Monday at Church Stretton School at 7.30pm. Doors open from 7pm and refreshments available in the interval.

Hope Bowdler village hall presents Untouchable (15) on Wednesday.

A series of French films is to be shown at All Stretton village hall with In the House (15) being the next one on Tuesday.The final one in the series is on November 26 and will be Rust and Bone (15). The French films start at 8pm and there is no interval.

CHURCH TREASURE - The Churches of Shropshire and their treasures are the subject of a short talk by the Rt Rev John Saxbee at 7.30pm in St Laurence’s Church on Thursday, October 10 John Saxbee is the former Bishop of Ludlow and Bishop of Lincoln and will launch the book Age Shall Not Weary Them –Shropshire Churches and Timeless Treasures by John Leonard at a special price of £15.

Refreshments will be available at the event.

APPLE PRESSING DAY - Take your apples along to Rushbury village hall on October 12 from 10am - 4.30pm.

During the day there will be teas, coffee and cake available, other refreshments and light lunches.

SCHOOL NEWS - Students have taken part in the annual sponsored walk and there will be history trips to Coalbrookdale. Students will be assisting with the open evening on Wednesday from 5pm - 7.30pm and the school welcomes visitors at its open mornings on Thursday, October 10 and October 11. Visits at other times can be arranged by appointment.

At St Lawrence’s Primary School KS1 pupils can join in film club and for other classes there are planned visits to Ludlow Museum, and a hockey tournament to take part in. The school is hosting an open afternoon for parents of reception children 2014/15.

There will be a visit to London for classes seven, eight and nine during December as part of their study of the Tudors together with visits to other important places incorporating elements of geography, history and design technology.

ENGAGING ISSUES - Can there be compassion in Health and Social Care?

was the subject of the evening’s talk.

Noel Beattie introduced the speakers Professor Rod Thomson, Shropshire director of public health and Coun Bob Welch who both spoke of their respective backgrounds in health and social care and how this is managed at the present time.

Both speakers then answered questions from the audience and were thanked for their presentations.

Neither expected payment but Engaging Issues presented them both with a cheque for their favourite charities.

The Engaging Issues annual lecture is on Tuesday when the speaker will be Dr Richard Holloway on the subject The Wobbly Kaleidoscope: the religious situation today. Tickets for this talk are being sold through Burway Books and cost £4.

Dr Holloway will also be at Carding Mill Valley from 12.30 - 2pm on the same day at an In Conversation with Dr Holloway event.

This is a free event with admission by ticket only also available through Burway Books.

The next Engaging Issues meeting will be on October 29, when the subject will be How we see ourselves…ethical effect of modern genetics by Chris Skidmore, a retired professor of biology.

MAYFAIR EVENT - There was a real buzz in the air at the recent Look After Yourself event held at Mayfair when visitors were able to sample zumba, belly dancing, and yoga and 60 people also sampled Bowen Technique, life balancing, Indian head massage, reflexology, acupressure, shiatsu, neck and shoulder massage, and plant spirit structural balancing.

During the day the cafe served up refreshments including healthy tasty lunches. A big thank you to all who helped and took part in this very successful event.

WIVES AND FRIENDS - The October meeting of Methodist Wives and Friends will take place on Tuesday at the Methodist hall at 7.30pm when members and visitors can experience the art of creative book making at an evening with Viv Potter. Pencils, rulers and glue will need to be taken to the meeting . Admission for non-members is £3 and all are welcome.

KABOODLE - Shayne is taking part in the Cardiff half marathon this weekend raising funds for Classrooms in the Clouds in Nepal.

There is a collecting box in the shop for those who wish to donate to this.

Donations of good novels can also be made and these will be sold for charity.

CAMERA CLUB - The first meeting of the season for the Longmynd Camera Club took place at the URC hall with a welcome and introduction by Graham Brown, the club’s secretary.

Members were invited to give a short presentation of their pictures together with an explanatory talk which transported those present between various places including Scotland, Anglesey, York, Istanbul and London where interesting features had been captured on camera.

There was also a brief interlude when some of the world’s most unusual buildings were shown together with a short film on English roses. The evening was rounded off with the chance to see a selection of prints displayed by another of the members.

The next meeting of the Camera Club will be on Wednesday at 7.30pm in the URC hall when members will be entering their pictures in the first competition of the season which has an open subject. The judge will be Tony Dudley. Visitors are welcome at all of the club’s meetings.

FOOD BANK - Plans are already well advanced for the setting up of the Food Bank in Church Stretton and further details will soon be available.

SMALLHOLDERS - The Shropshire Smallholders will be getting together at Leebotwood village hall on Thursday, October 10 for a talk on Land Management by Robert Jeffery starting at 7.30pm. COUNTRY MARKET - Will be open at Mayfair on October 11, from 9.15am - 11.45am selling home-made cakes, produce and craft items.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE HORNE - Tom McConville , BBC Folk Musician of the Year 2009, will be in concert with Andy Watt. Advance tickets are being sold through John Thomas Florists, Burway Books and the town council offices and cost £9. Admission at the door is £10.

GREEN PARTY - Meetings of the Green Party are due to take place at the Acorn Café on Monday at 10.30am and at 7.30pm and Tuesday at the Feathers Hotel in Ludlow.

GARDENING CLUBS - Church Stretton Gardening Club has arranged an outing to Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire on October 17, with its internationally renowned tree collection, heritage and landscape.

On Thursday, October 10 Acton Scott Gardening Club meets at 7.30pm in the village hall when Sue Russell will be the speaker on Perfume in the Garden.

LUNCH - A soup and apple pie lunch will be held at the parish centre on October 18, from 12 noon - 1.30pm.

Tickets cost £5.50 including coffee and tea. There will also be a raffle and cards and gifts will be on sale. The event raises funds for Save the Children.

BOOK SALE - A sale of books, CDs and DVDs will take place at the Silvester Horne Institute on October 26, raising funds for Mayfair. Donations of items for the sale may be taken to Mayfair or if a collection is needed please ring 01694 724346.

QUIZ NIGHT - A fun family quiz night on October 26, at 8pm will be held at the District Social Club. Entry fee per team member is £2 and the event offers good prizes. Proceeds will go to Church Stretton Football Club.

CHOIR - The Whitland Male Voice Choir will be in concert in Church Stretton on October 27, at 7.30pm.
