COFFEE MORNING - A coffee morning at the District Social Club on Saturday is open from 10 am - 12 noon and will raise funds for breast cancer and haematology at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

On sale will be the usual stalls selling cakes and bric-a-brac together with a tombola. Admission is £1 including coffee and biscuits. Organisers have raised over £26,000 for the causes since 2000.

SHUTTLE BUSES - It is the end of the season for the summer shuttle buses which are scheduled to finish running on Sunday.

SHROPSHIRE SMALLHOLDERS - The Shropshire Smallholders Group their visitors and guests will be on a fungi foray on Sunday morning at Earls Hill, Pontesbury, led by John Hughes.

During August the group visited Fordhall Farm which runs 200 sheep, 100 cattle and raises Gloucester old spots.

There is an educational aspect to the farm with community vegetable plots, a forest school and work with mental health charities. All produce is sold directly to the public. The group also had a stand at Burwarton Show. The group will now be meeting at Leebotwood village hall from 7pm, and at the next meeting on October 10, there will be a talk on land management by Robert Jeffery.

BIRDS OF SHROPSHIRE - There may still be time to sign up to the National Trust’s Birds of Shropshire course with meetings twice a month from September to June 2014 except for December and January. For full information ring 01694 724170.

HERITAGE - As part of the heritage weekend with its ride and stride theme, St Margaret’s Church in Acton Scott was the setting for an exhibition of flowers, poetry and readings centred around the bicycle.

At the entrance to the church a tandem cycle rested alongside a floral cushion compete with two figures in a Daisy, Daisy theme as the song goes.

Moving inside it was possible to read about the invention of the bicycle, and each of the floral arrangements, arranged around various cycle parts were accompanied by a poem or reading. It was an imaginative idea in keeping with the theme of the weekend.

TOTE - Winners in the September tote in aid of Rushbury village hall funds were Mrs C Beaver and Mrs V Cousins who each won £5, Mr W Reynolds and Mrs B Pugh who each won £10 and Mr P Allworth who scooped the £40 prize.

DAY OUT - A day at Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire is planned by the gardening club for October 17. To enquire for seats ring 01694720131.

SHOE BOX COMPETITION - Just a reminder that the ‘transform a show box’ competition organised by Scrappies needs to be completed and handed in by Thursday, October 3.

Prizes will be awarded at the open day on October 5.

SCHOOL NEWS - St Lawrence’s Primary School is planning changes to its residential visits to give pupils more opportunity to enhance their education in the light of new curriculum guidelines from central government. There has been a visit by Sea Legs Puppet Theatre and a pupils have taken part in a Football Festival with other local primary schools. The under 11 boys will be taking part in the English Schools FA Trophy competition. A visit to Ludlow Museum for class five and a cross country competition at Bedstone are planned.

Year six pupils now have to start thinking about their choice of secondary school.

St Lawrence's Primary School has a vacancy for a parent governor and would be pleased to speak to anyone wishing to know more about the role.

Church Stretton School held a summer school for the new students in year seven which was attended by 38 of the new students. A former year 11 student has presented assemblies, and the annual sponsored walk will take place tomorrow (Friday). An open evening on October 9 and open mornings on October 10 and 11 are planned for those considering year six transfers.

CIRCLE DANCING - Circle dancing takes place at St Lawrence’s Primary School during the school term from 7pm - 9pm and no experience is needed to take part. The fee is £5 per evening and more information is available by ringing 01743 241127.

MAGPIES - The Magpies football club is holding fun football training sessions for boys and girls in reception and year one on Saturday mornings from 9am - 10am on Russell’s Meadow. Children must wear shin pads, appropriate footwear, and take a drink with them.

Westhope CLOVER CLUB - Fifty members gathered at the Plough Inn, Wistanstow, for what members call the anniversary meeting. It is 36 years since the Clover Clubs first meeting at Westhope. A cream tea had been arranged, cheese scones and fruit scones, the fruit ones served with jam and cream and lots and lots of tea.

Members were served by George and Katie who were so helpful. A huge raffle was drawn.

The next meeting will be special. It will be a slide show presented by Mr Dave Evans (Hopesay). Many will remember Caddiks Stores at Corfton and the slides are pictures taken by Syd Caddik in the 1940s.

There are slides of Westhope, Seifton Bache, Aston Munslow, just to name a few, so attendees might even see someone they know.

All are welcome on October 3, doors will open at 7pm and admission is just 50p.

WHIST DRIVES - There are two whist drives in October, on October 7 and 21. The one on October 21 is a partner whist, so bring your partner or organisers can find you one. The start time for the whist drive is 8pm and admission £1.50.

There will be a prize raffle and refreshments.

BONFIRE NIGHT - The bonfire in the Hollow Meadow will be lit at 7pm.

Fireworks will go off a little later.

Refreshments of soup and hot dogs will be served in the village hall. There will also be stalls, tombola, surprise parcels etc. Admission on the field £3 adults, £1 children.

PRIZE BINGO - November 7 for Clover Club funds. Doors open at 7pm, lots of lovely prizes.

VILLAGE HALL LOTTERY - Winners in the September draw: 1st prize of £35 Jordan Downes, Ludlow.

Four prizes of £5.90 Patsy Rainsford, Burwood; Peggy Naylor, Aston on Clun and Carl Malcom of Telford won two prizes.

HARVEST FESTIVAL - Back after some year at Westhope Chapel on October 23 starting at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome.
