MAYFAIR - A ‘look after yourself’ event will take place at Mayfair on Saturday from 10am - 3pm offering a chance to meet the therapists, featuring Kinesiology and Bowen Technique together with yoga, acupuncture and nutrition. There will also be local food and craft sellers on hand displaying their wares and the café will be open to serve food throughout. Walking for health is another feature offered at Mayfair. Entry to the event is free.

SPONSORED WALK - A 12km sponsored walk leaves from Lower wood, All Stretton, on Saturday at 10.30am. A bacon and egg roll and a drink will be served at 9.30am and those finishing the 12K walk may purchase a pie and peas meal for £1.50.

The entry fee is £6 or £6 in sponsorship. There is also a one mile walk for children and parents on the same day. Ring 01694 751369 to find out more.

QUIZ NIGHT - Ken Willis will be the question master at a quiz night held at the District Club starting at 7.45pm on Saturday. Proceeds of the event will benefit Animal Samaritans, the local dog shop.

FOLK DANCE - Monthly folk dance evenings continue at Ticklerton village hall on Saturday night from 8pm until late. Ring 01694 722418 if you would like to know more. Experience is not necessary as Dot and Ron are on hand to show the way.

MEETING - A final meeting before the Longmynd Hike will take place at the District Club on Sunday starting at 8pm.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES - Walking football for the over 50s is on offer at the leisure centre and more information is available by ringing 01694 724957. On Wednesdays from 7pm - 9pm there is badminton for all including those with disabilities as sports wheelchairs are available together with free loan of racquets, ring 01694 725588 to find out more. Stretton Sharks hockey is for boys and girls aged from five to 11 years, and takes place every school Monday. Turn up anytime between 3.30pm and 5pm if interested. Sessions for the hockey cost £2 or £15 for ten.

LITERARY SOCIETY - Meet at Church Stretton Library to hear Julian Smith speak on What is Poetry? Meeting opens at 7.30pm and entrance is through the rear door of the library on Monday.

GARDENING CLUB - Tuesday is the next meeting of the Church Stretton and District Gardening Club when Reg Moule will be on hand to provide An Evening with Reg. Doors open at 7pm and the talk starts at 7.30pm.

ENGAGING ISSUES - Can there be compassion in Health Care? is the subject of the evening talk on Tuesday at 7.30pm in the URC, presented by Dr Rod Thompson and Bob Welch. All welcome.

CAMERA CLUB - The first meeting of the season for Longmynd Camera Club will be on Wednesday at 7.30pm in the URC hall.

All welcome to the evening which will be a showing of members ‘images of summer’ providing an informal sharing of prints and digital images accompanied by a short talk.

The first competition of the season will be on October 9 when the subject is open.

The judge will be Tony Dudley.

PORTRAITS - Eight sessions of portrait drawing are planned for Wednesday at Church Stretton School from 7pm - 9pm.

The eight sessions are open to any ability and cost £40 or £7 per session and are offered by Frans Wesselman.

Frans is also looking for models of any age or gender and will pay £20 per evening.

UNA - Vijay Mehta, chairman of Uniting for Peace will be the speaker at Concord College on Thursday, September 26 from 3.45pm -5.15pm.

The talk on The Economics of Killing will be thought provoking and is for an all age audience including students.

COMPETITION - Don’t forget the ‘transform a shoe box’ competition organised by Scrappies which will be judged on October 3 and prizes awarded on the open day of October 5. Entry is £1 and the shoe box can be filled with items from the store to assist with the transformation.

The three age groups are under 11 years, 11-16 years and 17 years plus.

NATIONAL TRUST - Birds of Shropshire, Habitat and Season, is a National Trust event taking place from September until June 2014.

Twice monthly meetings are held, except in December and January.

AUGUST TOTE - Lucky winners in the August tote in aid of Rushbury village hall were Mr R Henderson and Mrs A Davies who each won £5, Mrs G Meddlicott and Mrs J Furber who each won £10, and Mrs K Southern who scooped the £40 prize.

WIVES AND FRIENDS - The annual general meeting of Methodist Wives and Friends took place in the Methodist hall on September 10.

President Chris Faulkner welcomed members and visitors to the meeting.

The secretary’s report gave a summary of a very interesting and enjoyable year with a variety of speakers, activity evenings and visits during 2012-13.

The treasurer presented the accounts which included a donation of £265 to the First Responders raised at last year’s annual spring fair.

All of the officers agreed to continue to stand for another year and were thanked for their work by the president.

There followed discussions about interesting activities which could be included in the coming year’s programme, with some conversation on hearing more about the Community Health and Well-Being Centre.The evening was rounded off with social chit chat over light refreshments.

The next meeting of the Wives and Friends Group will be on October 8, when members and visitors can take part in an evening of creative book making.

KABOODLE - The proposed 12km run in Ludlow for the Severn Hospice has been cancelled so Shayne is now seeking donations for the Cardiff half marathon which he is running in October for Classrooms in the Clouds.

He would like to thank everyone who has donated novels for sale and can accept further gifts of these at any time.

COUNTRY MARKET - The market will be open for business on September 27 at Mayfair community centre from 9.15am-11.45am selling home produced good and crafts.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE HORNE - Tom McConville, BBC Folk Musician of the Year 2009 will be in concert with Andy Watt at the Silvester Horne Institute on October 11, at 7.30pm. Advance tickets are £9 and being sold through John Thomas Florists, Burway Books and at the town council offices. Admission at the door is £10.

BOOK FAIR - A call for books, CDs and DVDs goes out for a sale at the Silvester Horne Institute on October 26 when proceeds will go to Mayfair.
