MAY FAIR - The annual May Fair at Mayfair community centre takes place on Saturday from 11am-3pm with entertainment and stalls selling bric-abrac, cakes and bakes, plants, books, DVDs and CDs, crafts and also a raffle.

SHUTTLE BUS - This is the weekend when the summer shuttle buses are in service offering transport to Longmynd and Stiperstones and places en route and the Wenlock Wanderer which runs via Acton Scott Historic Farm Museum.

The shuttles will operate every weekend including Bank Holidays from Saturday up until September 29.

RSPCA - A little further afield the RSPCA at Gonsal Farm Animal Centre will be hosting a coffee morning and bring and buy sale on Sunday from 11am-4pm.

NEW ZEALAND - A fundraiser for New Zealand following the devastation caused by the earthquakes will take place at Mayfair community centre from 6.30pm-10pm on Sunday.

MUSIC NIGHT - A music night at The King’s Arms on Sunday will feature Blues Boy Dan and Fight the Bear. The event starts at 6.30pm.

PLANT SALE - There will be a plant sale at Little Stretton village hall on Monday from 2pm-4pm when tea and cakes will also be served.

LIBRARY EVENT - On Tuesday from 10.30am-11am and then weekly, Rhymetime will feature songs, puppets and stories for the under threes.

SCHOOL NEWS - St Lawrence’s Primary School has three vacancies on the governing body and would be interested in hearing from anyone who would like know more about these positions.

The Quiz Club members at St Lawrence’s have won through to the national final which will be held in Oxford, and the tag rugby teams are entering the first round of the Tag to Twickenham national competition.

There is a visit to the Museum of Sculpture for class four and year five will be at Bryntysilio.

There is a thank you from the Friends of the school for the support of the Fun Day which raised over £1500 and attracted £750 in match funding from Barclays Bank. Raising the figure to over £2000.

Church Stretton School has hosted two successful open mornings and the school council has met with county council representatives to give feedback on youth issues.

An afternoon tea for senior citizens has taken place. Students have presented a Stretton’s Got Talent show with singing, music, dancing and a Shakespeare soliloquy. During the interval refreshments were served, with donations invited for the charity cake bake sale.

The evening ended with the audience invited to join with the students in singing a final chorus.

ANNUAL ASSEMBLY - The 47th annual assembly of Church Stretton town council was held at the Silvester Horne Institute last week chaired by Coun Tom Beaumont, Church Stretton mayor. He welcomed guests George Candler, director of commissioning and Chris Edwards, southern area director of commissioning Shropshire council.

During the evening Chris Edwards gave a presentation on the Strategic Commissioning Prototype and answered questions from the floor.

In his report as chairman Coun Beaumont said that the town council had worked hard to build a good working relationship with residents, local businesses and Shropshire Council.

There had been important issues such as SAMDEV consultations, the market towns revitalisation and the shop/park/save scheme which is appreciated by many and hopefully helps trading and shopping needs in the town.

Coun Beaumont ended by saying that he will be standing down and he wished the new town council and his successor well, and hoped that the current co-operation and goodwill continues to be the main ethos of the council to ensure a bright future for this wonderful town.

There were reports from various representatives and it was interesting to note that membership of the leisure centre was close on 30, and that funding had been obtained for major improvements to the pitches in the Brooksbury and Russells Meadow Sportsground.

COMMUNITY CINEMA - Presents Argo (15) at Hope Bowdler village hall on Wednesday and on May 13 Beasts of the Southern Wild (12A) at Church Stretton school. Doors open at 7pm, admission is £4 or £2 for those in full time education. Interval refreshments will be available.

GREEN PARTY - A post election meeting of the Green Party will take place at the Feathers Hotel in Ludlow at 7.30pm on Tuesday.

INTERFAITH - A round table discussion at the Pilgrim Centre in Craven Arms will be held on Thursday, May 9 at 12 noon. The hour long discussion arranged by the South Shropshire Interfaith Forum will be under the heading ‘should faiths do mission in a multi-faith society?’ All welcome.

SMALLHOLDERS - The Smallholders group will me meeting at Leebotwood village hall at 7.30pm on Thursday, May 9 for a talk about birds of prey by Chris Neal. The usual members exchange time, seed swap and sales table will be open. Tea and cake will follow the talk.

COUNTRY MARKET - The country market will be open for business at Mayfair community centre on May 10 from 9.15am-11.45am selling cakes, produce and crafts.

COMEDY - The Longmynd Hotel is hosting a Comedy Night on May 10 offering a two course meal at 7.30pm before the comedy at 8.45pm.

The cost of the evening is £15 per ticket which should be paid in advance of the evening.

BOOK SALE - A bumper book sale at the Silvester Horne Institute on May 11 will raise funds for Mayfair community centre, and will be open from 10am- 4pm.

CHORAL EVENT - Une Soiree Musicale will be presented at Church Stretton School by the Stretton Choral Society on May 11 at 7.30pm. The evening will feature French choral music by Faure and Gounod.

BATCH BURNER - May 11 is the date of the Longmynd Batch Burner cycle event in support of Norbury Primary School. Open to all those over 16 years. There will be refreshments, a bar and musical entertainment from 3pm.

Entry is £25 and full information is available from Plush Hill Cycles in the Square.

PITSTOP - St Laurence’s Church holds a pitstop event on May 12 at the parish centre with craft activities, songs and a meal from 3pm-5pm. Full information is available by ringing 01694 722588.
