COUNTRY MARKET - Open at Mayfair tomorrow (Friday) from 9.15am - 11.45am for the sale of cakes, produce and craft items.

QUIZ NIGHT - A quiz night at the parish centre tomorrow (Friday) will raise funds for the Senior Guides arctic adventure. Pay at the door, admission is £5 including a hot supper. The quiz night will begin at 7.30pm.

RAILWAY EXHIBITION - A model railway exhibition will take place at the Silvester Horne Institute on Saturday from 10am - 4pm. Admission £3, various concessions available.

RAIL USERS’ ASSOCIATION - The 25th AGM of the Rail Users’ Association is due to take place on Monday in the parish centre starting at 7.30pm.

Doors will open at 7.15pm and the guests will include Coun Mansel Williams, chair of the Shrewsbury/Telford/Marches Strategic Rail Group and senior managers from Arriva Trains Wales.

Due to Jim Hibbert stepping down from the chair, the association is looking for nominations for this post.

The association has put out several tips on how to obtain much reduced travel tickets. A survey of station usage has shown an increase of 2% which is an increase of 41.7% over the past ten years with Church Stretton passenger usage during 2011-1012 reaching 119,427.

CANCER CARE - The Stretton and Shropshire Cancer Care group will be meeting at Mayfair on Monday at 2.30pm when Robin Jukes-Hughes will present A Portrait of Shropshire.

At the previous meeting in March, Joe Collins spoke about Mindfulness. This is increasingly recognised as an effective way to reduce stress, enhance emotional intelligence, and effectively handle painful thoughts and feelings. It is a practical and useful skill which can be learned.

Dr Joe Collins is a former research scientist and takes an evidence based approach to mindfulness. At present he runs mindfulness courses at Mayfair.

Doreen Hall is available as a befriender and can be contacted through Mayfair should you feel the need to have someone to talk to. The Cancer Care Group has been set up to care for people in the Strettons and Shropshire who have cancer, and their relatives and friends.

COMMUNITY CINEMA - Films this month include Anna Karenina (12A) at Church Stretton school on Monday and Skyfall (12A) to be screened at Acton Scott village hall on April 16. Films start at 7.30pm,interval refreshment will be served and admission is £4 or £2 for those in full time education.

GREEN PARTY - The Green Party will be meeting at the Acorn Cafe at 10.30am on Monday and there will be a further meeting at the Feathers in Ludlow at 7.30pm on Tuesday.

WIVES AND FRIENDS - The monthly get-together of the Wives and Friends Group will be on Tuesday at 7.30pm in the Methodist hall. On this occasion Peter Koenig will be describing his experiences as an Olympic Gamesmaker. All visitors are welcome.

SMALLHOLDERS - The Shropshire Smallholders will be meeting at Leebotwood village hall on Thursday, April 11 at 7.30pm with a talk entitled Sheep: Endoparasites, and will be planning the programme for the rest of the year which will, it is hoped include talks on birds of prey, waterfowl and fungi plus a visit to Fordhall Farm.

Visitors and guests are always welcome at any of the meetings where there is always the chance of buying some smallholder produce, swapping seeds or looking for a bargain in the wanted or for sale section.

WORKSHOP - The last set of workshop sessions at Scrappies during the Easter School Holidays is on Thursday, April 11. Morning sessions are for the five to 10’s and afternoon sessions are for those 11 years and over. Workshops are led by Lesley McKnight and should be pre-booked and paid for in advance.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE HORNE - The next Friday night event at the Silvester Horne Institute will be on April 12 when the high energy Celtic Irish English folk rock band Hagglebag from Worcester, will be there to entertain.

MAYFAIR - On April 12 Stuart Boreham will be giving a talk he has called Uphill all the Way.

Stuart has cerebral palsy and yet has sailed around the world, an exploit which will feature in his talk. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Tickets including tea and coffee are £3.50.

Stuart will be giving a second talk on May 17.

MANURE - Well rotted horse manure is available for £1 a bag and free delivery by ringing 07580 043981. This manure is completely chemical free.

MENS CHORUS - The Craven Arms Mens Chorus will be at Rushbury village hall on April 13 at 7.30pm raising funds for Hope Bowdler church.

CONCERT - April 13 sees a concert in the Methodist church which will feature two talented young musicians and two old favourites. Alex Hearle on saxophone and James Smith on trombone will join with Barrie Mackay and Richard Walker on piano to provide Music in the Air. They will play music by Bach, Mendelssohn, Mozart and others. Tickets are being sold through Burway Books and John Thomas Florists and cost £7, and £4 for students. The concert starts at 7.30pm and proceeds will go to support the school and the clinic for disabled young people in Haiti.
