ONE MAN BAND - One Man Band in the form of Brian Williams will be at the District Social Club on Saturday from 8.30pm. Entry is free and there will be a late bar.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY - A holocaust memorial event for 2013 is being held at the community centre in Craven Arms on Sunday at 6.30pm when there will be a time of reflection in readings, music, images and silence remembering the holocaust and genocides in living memory. Everyone is invited to go along and participate in the keeping of this memorial day in south Shropshire, sharing conversations about world crises and their impact on us and providing us with a time to get together and build bridges. Refreshments will be available.

LOCAL HISTORY - Dr Ian Dormor will be speaking about Some Aspects of Landscape History at the Church Stretton Area Local History meeting on Monday at 2.30pm in the URC hall. His talk will reveal discoveries about our ancient countryside. All welcome.

BIRDS - Monday is the date of Shropshire Ornithological Society’s annual general meeting which will be followed by a talk under the heading Idiot’s Guide to Wildlife Photography given by Alan Heath. The meeting will take place at the Methodist hall at 7.30pm and all are welcome.

Admission for non-members is £2 including refreshments.

LITERARY SOCIETY - The Shropshire Literary Society also holds its annual general meeting on Monday at the library, starting at 7pm. Following the AGM, there will be readings on sport and adventure chosen by members. Refreshments will be available. Entry is through the door at the rear of the library.

WOMEN, MEN AND POWER - Women, Men and Power is the theme of a talk by theologian and poet Nicola Slee, who asks Does power always have to govern relationships? The meeting is part of the programme of talks for Engaging Issues and will be held at the URC on Tuesday at 7.30pm. All welcome to enter into the ensuing discussion.

GARDENING CLUB - The Adventures of an Alpine Enthusiast is the title of a talk by Jim Almond at the meeting of the Gardening Club on Tuesday at the Silvester Horne Institute. Doors open at 7pm for tea and coffee before the talk at 7.30pm. Admission for visitors is £2 and all are welcome.

SCHOOL NEWS - St Lawrence’s Primary School pupils have been offered a Bikeability course providing important training for those in Year 6.

Teams from Years 5 and 6 have been competing in an indoor athletics event at Church Stretton School, taking in track, field and relay events. Afterschool clubs featuring netball, hockey, cross country and football will also be starting. The school will enter a hockey tournament and there will be tag rugby at Church Stretton School. The Friends of the School would like to thank all those who supported the barrow of bottles which raised £239, and also thanks to those who purchased Christmas cards and reindeer food. The Friends are now planning the Easter fun-day event. More information about the activities of the school can be found on the website.

CAN YOU DIG IT? - The new season of events at the Silvester Horne Institute kicks off with Can You Dig It? on February 2 when Jo Stephenson and Dan Woods will entertain with comedy songs, all with a horticultural theme.

The show starts at 7.30pm. Ticket sales are through John Thomas Florists, Burway Books and the town council offices, and are priced at £8, £5 for under-16s and £25 for a family ticket.

SPORTS TASTERS - The badminton club is offering taster sessions for all at the leisure centre on Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm for juniors and 8.30-9.30pm for adult beginners and improvers.
