CHRISTIAN UNITY SERVICE - A joint service of prayers for Christian Unity will take place at St Laurence’s Church at 6pm on Sunday as part of the week of prayer.

COMMUNITY CINEMA - The film to be screened at Acton Scott village hall on Tuesday is Private Peaceful (12a). Starts 7.30pm and admission is £4 on the door or £2 for anyone in full-time education. The next film to be shown at Church Stretton School will be The Hunger Games (12a) on February 4.

LUCKY NUMBERS - The winners in the Rushbury village hall tote for December were John Lewis and Michael Fryer, each winning £5, Marjorie Price and Cara Ayres who each won £10 and Roy Davies who scooped the £40 prize. There is a reminder that the annual subscriptions are due this month.

WEEK OF PRAYER - A week of prayer for Christian Unity runs up until January 25. There is a joint service at 6pm in St Laurence’s Church on Sunday with prayer services also at other locations in the town. The Quakers will meet at the Methodist Hall at 7.30pm on Monday, the Methodists will meet in their church on Tuesday at 1.30pm, and the URC Church meeting will be at 9.30am on Wednesday. St Laurence’s will hold a meeting on January 24 at 11.30am and St Milburga’s Catholic Church will meet at 10am on January 25.

QUILTING - A course on quilting is on offer from January 31 to March 21 when there will be a chance to make a sampler quilt. The course will be from 10am-3pm daily. To make further enquiries please ring 01694 781307.

ENTERTAINMENT - Brian Williams, One Man Band, will be at the District Social Club from 8.30pm on January 26. Entry is free but must be before 10.30pm. A late bar will be available during the evening. On February 2, Jo Stephenson and Dan Wood will be at the Silvester Horne Institute at the start of the spring season of events to entertain with comedy songs, ballads and raps all based on a horticultural theme. Advance tickets are £8 for adults, £5 for under 16s or £25 for a family ticket. Tickets are available from John Thomas Florists and Burway Books, or from Church Stretton Town Council offices.

LOCAL HISTORY - The Church Stretton Local History Group will be hosting a talk by Dr Ian Dormor at the URC Hall on January 28 at 2.30pm when the subject of his talk will be Some Aspects of Landscape History. Admission for non-members is £2.

AGMs - There are two annual general meetings scheduled for January 28, including The Shropshire Ornithological Society, which will hold its meeting at the Methodist Hall at 7.30pm followed by Alan Heath with An Idiot’s Guide to Wildlife Photography. Admission to nonmembers is £2 to include refreshments.

January 28 is also the annual general meeting of the Shropshire Literary Society which meets at the library at 7pm. Following the business of the meeting there will be readings on sport and adventure chosen by members. Please use the door at the rear of the building.

EVENING CLASSES - Don’t forget classes on photography, family history research, spreadsheets, file management and databases, playing the clarinet and keyboards begin the new term this week and are held at Church Stretton School.
