Bishop’s Castle time and times, marches choir news, art talk, town crier diary dates and more
1:04pm Thursday 30th August 2012 in Bishop's Castle
TIME AND TIMES – The next poets’ corner is at the Castle Hotel, Bishop’s Castle, on September 13. Readings and music begin at 8pm, with a meal at 7pm. This month’s theme is ‘Time and Times’ and new faces are very welcome. To book a meal, call Bryan Podmore on 01588 620541.
MARCHES CHOIR NEWS – Rehearsals begin again on Monday at 7.15pm in the Community College, Bishop’s Castle, for the Marches Choir. This popular choir welcomes new members of all voices and ages who enjoy singing, and no audition is required. Choir secretary Philippa Whitaker said: “We are practising for a delightful concert on December 9, conducted by local musician John Bowen. The programme will include Bach’s Sleepers Wake, Charpentier’s Christmas Mass, and carols for choir, including Brahms’ The Angels’ Greeting and The Little Road to Bethlehem. The soloists in the concert will be well-known local soprano Rebecca Afonwy Jones, tenor Paul Curievici and baritone Owain Browne.
Do come along and enjoy a good sing with our very friendly group.” Call Philippa on 01588 680312 for more details.
CONCEPTUAL ART TALK – Do you find conceptual art a mystery? What’s this about a severed cow – or an unmade bed? It’s a phenomenon many of us have difficulty making sense of. Phillip Woolley, artist and art historian, will be giving the second YouCaxton literary lecture on October 2, at 6.30pm on the subject of ‘Tracey Emin and her bed’.
He will look at the development of conceptual art in its social and historical context using Tracey Emin’s bed as a theme. He will discuss how conceptual art and the Britpop artists developed and how their work became so lucrative for a small number of them.
YouCaxton can be found at 23 High St, Bishop’s Castle. Call 01743 818724 for more information.
TOWN CRIER – Bishop’s Castle town crier Mike Shanahan recently took part in the town criers’ competition at Blists Hill Victorian Town in Ironbridge, where his escort, Christine Bebbington won an award as the best dressed escort. Mike recently won an award as the best dressed town crier in a competition at Nantwich and, as he is also the piper for the Loyal Company of Town Criers, he led the procession through the town on July 28. On August 18, Mike and Christine took part in the Welsh Border Town Criers’ competition, which was held at Knighton. A total of 16 criers took part from all over Britain. During the summer, the couple have also travelled up to Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire, having been selected to take part once again in the British Town Criers’ Championships. In a previous competition, Mike was judged the best ambassador for being the best town crier to promote his town – which is, of course, Bishop’s Castle. On the second day of this year’s championship he was awarded second place. To round off a very busy summer, Mike and Christine will be competing in Banbury on September 1.
